data problems in Mexico

I'm temporarily in Mexico for a few months. I was excited that AT&T in Mexico is now included in my US unlimited plan, and I kept my service with AT&T because of this. However, I find I often have very slow or no cellular data, even when it says it's connected to AT&T's network and has five bars of connectivity. Is there something I can change in my settings to improve my data speed while in Mexico?

I was in Cancun 2018 and my phone didn’t have any coverage only wifi calling work. I called customer service and they said they tried to registered my phone in the system but it didn’t work. I will be in Cancun again this June and I have Unlimited Elite now hope it works. Maybe I call customer service here so they can register me in by the time I’m there.

@lvl

And what plan did you have in 2018?  Unlimited Elite includes free roaming in Canada and Mexico, your previous plan may not.  Did you turn on roaming services? Roaming is turned off by default on your phone in settings.  It's also off on the account level.

It has repeatedly been explained by @sandblaster  that when you are outside of the United States, you are no longer connected to AT& T . When out of the 50 states, you are using a foreign carrier and a different service provider.

AT&T Mexico is not AT&T in the USA.  Yes, AT&T owns it.  They also own Cricket.  But you are not their customer.

Other carriers are obligated to provide their own customers with priority service before providing service to those who are roaming for free on their Network. It does not matter what level of service you have for AT&T in the u.s.a., you will still be  deprioritized while you are outside of the 50 states.

the way to resolve this is to have customer care enable Manual Network selection. The rep will need to open their “torch tool.” Select ENABLE MNS then custom download . Once that is enabled you may select networks Manually . Ever since the merger the preferred roaming list in Mexico is jacked. It’s better if you select your own tower. Att has agreements with every carrier in Mexico. Note that if you select Telcel that they have ATT throttled, so it’s gonna be slow. Try Lusa or Att mex first.

I am in Cabo for an extended period of time.   I can not connect to data, so no uber & i've been stuck several time.  After several hours on chat and live support AT&T says...sorry!!  This is after 5 calls and reassuring them airplane mode is off and cellular data is on.  Hopefully, AT&T can assist me here, since they can't/won't help me directly.

ATT needs to be sued, I switched from T Mobile to ATT specifically because I am in Mexico 6 months out of the year.  The data is non usable, no matter what part of Mexico I travel to. I will look into a (Edited per community guidelines) (Edited per community guidelines) as I had previously been with T-mobile for 12 years with no problems whatsover, they just slowed my data down once I reached a certain level.  With ATT the data is slow in the US and virtually non existent in Mexico.  This is a 100% scam.

@Garnival

You do know that when you're in Mexico you're not actually using AT&T anymore right?

Why don't you go into settings and switch to a different service provider manually.

I’ve called att multiple times to try enabling network selection. Each time I’m told it’s literally impossible and no matter how the matter is escalated, I’m continuously told it’s impossible and anyone saying they’ve done it isn’t telling the truth

@SpartanKid did you tell them how to do it. They just don’t know how to do it. If you read my previous comment. It will tell you how to instruct them how to do it. I promise . I use mind all the time . I have to get them to redo it each time my phone is issued a new sim.
