data problems in Mexico

I'm temporarily in Mexico for a few months. I was excited that AT&T in Mexico is now included in my US unlimited plan, and I kept my service with AT&T because of this. However, I find I often have very slow or no cellular data, even when it says it's connected to AT&T's network and has five bars of connectivity. Is there something I can change in my settings to improve my data speed while in Mexico?

@sandblaster Did you happen to test your speeds? Curious what mbps you're getting in Mexico so I know for reference what it normal

@sandblaster so is there a way on my iPhone to manually look for and connect to an AT&T Mexico signal? It certainly seems reasonable that AT&T would have a solid partnership to use the AT&T Mexico network as the default.

@gnrkeiffer Yes, if that ability has been enabled on your line. If enabled you are able to select from available carriers. You must call to get that enabled.

Hi All!

Same boat. We have the best (most expensive) AT&T plan, Unlimited Elite. We are in Mexico for a few months and decided to keep the service after strong assurances all would be well. Well that has not been the case, speeds are abysmal. I literally purchased a prepaid Telcel SIM and put it in my phone. Connectivity in the exact same place went from 0.15 Mbps to like 50 Mbps. Clearly Telcel is strongly reducing speeds for roaming customers. It's a bummer we are paying $150 a month for 0.15 Mbps averages and going out of our way to buy Telcel SIM cards. ATT customer service is typical, low-resourced, hyper scripted, hard to understand, and not super knowledgeable. They just want to get you off the phone after asking you to do a few steps any 10 year old would have already done on their own.  It seems like AT&T is banking on its US customers just going to mexico for like a quick weekend and returning. So after this we decided to just switch to prepaid for while we are here, but NOPE you have to 'go to a store inside the united states'. Needless to say this is difficult from Mexico.  So be warned you are handcuffed if you don't want to lose your phone number.

Also, ATT advertises heavily here in Mexico. I'm sure their customers wouldn't put up with the speeds being offered to it's US customers.

It would be GREAT just to get ONE straight answer from someone really knowledgeable in the company as to why we are getting so deprioritized by the roaming providers.

If you if you expecting your high dollar plan to work well in Mexico for extended periods be warned it will not. Take necessary action before coming down here if you'll be here longer than a few weeks and need good service.

Following up. I talked at long lengths with an "advanced" support rep who told me it is NOT possible with AT&T to get the option to choose your tower when international. Every other company has this, but according to him AT&T does not and he is sure of it because several people have asked.

I'm so disappointed we switched to ATT and looking into switching to Verizon as they have specials to buy you out of a contract early to avoid major termination fees or penalties.

And agree with you. The support online just give scripted answers. They have you type a long paragraph about your problem and then they don't even read what you said and ask you questions like a child that you already spent time explaining to them

To make matters even worse, AT&T won't unlock my phone so I can use a TELCEL sim card when I go to Mexico. So they give me terrible service there, and no option to add a 2nd chip and pay more just to have the service they promised me

Hmm, I'm in the same boat. Used to be when I had Verizon I was able to switch from movistar to telcel, etc.. manually. Not so now, and almost zero data. Was thinking of changing to esim, so I could put in a telcel sim and have both. We will see. Sounds like they locked you out.
