AT&T Wireless plan & Move to Switzerland - Loss of service, loss of banking conncetion
Hi,
I got a AT&T Unlimited S/M plan and moved to Switzerland a month ago. All my banks are relying on a US number to confirm my identity, i.e. when doing a bank wire transfer or just registering your credit card for payment. For the first month I partially used the daily international pass as well as the passport feature in order to receive text messages from the US for these confirmations. In order to save bandwidth I kept the phone for the most time in airplane mode.
After the first months was billed & payed, I noticed now that my SIM card seems to be deactivated. I cannot switch from airplane mode to normal operation anymore - the phone remains in "No Service". Removing and reinserting the SIM card also doesnt help.
Additionally I cannot login to my AT&T web account anymore as AT&T also tries to send me a confirmation text message to verify my identity.
So in the end AT&T essentially logged me out of my bank accounts & their own webservice. Does anyone have a suggestion here? This costs a lot of money and its the responsibility of AT&T imo. I did not stop any service nor payment.
Best regards
Julian

There is no reason for your SIM card to be deactivated just for leaving your phone in airplane mode. Presuming your service wasn’t suspended, there has to be some other issue. If you do get your issue resolved, be aware there is no roaming charge for received texts. Incoming texts are free. If you have WiFi calling activated, that should also work from Switzerland.

Oh my god sandblaster your worth a million dollar. Thank you so much, the wifi calling worked. The SIM still cannot register to a network here, but I was able to turn on the wifi calling option and receive a first text message.
Somehow turning on the wifi calling option only worked for me via
"Settings -> Phone ->Wi-Fi Calling".
It didnt work via
"Settings -> Cellular -> Wi-Fi Calling". Not sure if this is an apple bug (iphone SE 2016).
Anyways, for now I think the Wi-Fi Calling is good enough for me to use the identification services via text messages that are linked to my bank accounts. Thank you!

Sure glad that worked for you. Just FYI, that also proves your SIM card was not deactivated. WiFi calling wouldn’t work either if it were. No idea why you aren’t connecting to a local carrier, though.
