Scan to Email Protocol error

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 and I am trying to set up Scan to Email in a wireless environment.   After setting up the Scan to Email in the HP printer software, my test is successful however, when I load documents and select Scan on my printer, I receive a protocol error. What are the resolution steps to fix a protocol error?

What guidance does HP give as to the potential causes of a Protocol Error.

What did the test consist of?  Did it send you an e-mail?

HP indicates my ATT wireless set up is not supported which I thought was odd.  Scan to Email functionality is the only set up I am experiencing an issue with.  I've been using the printer with ATT wireless for years but never had to use the Scan to Email function until now. 

The Scan to Email test was performed within the HP printer software that tests whether or not I have the email configured correctly on the printer side.  I'm certainly not technical but it seems odd that I wouldn't be able to perform this function.

I don't know why it wouldn't work either.  But apparently the test doesn't really test the connection.  Get the correct information for sending SMTP from the AT&T E-mail Client Setup page here:  https://www.att.com/support/article/email-support/KM1010523/

Specifically:

SSL(encryption): Yes server: smtp.mail.att.net Port: 465 or 587

Use your e-mail address as the user id, and obtain and use Secure Mail Key in place of your actual password when doing this setup.
