AT&T Cordless Telephone/Answering System 9353 troubleshooting
When the (AT&T Cordless Telephone/Answering System 9353) phone is in use, the answering machine does not pick up. The caller hears at least 8 rings, rather than a busy signal and I hear a few beeps while using the phone. I don't have call waiting. This is a VOIP line.

Sonic VOIP uses call waiting so no, the 2nd caller will not hear a busy signal.
You can turn Call Waiting off as per this page

An answering machine (including a cordless telephone with a base that has an answer machine feature) cannot pick up while the line is in use. Are you saying that you'd like the carrier-supplied voice mail service to answer the phone when the line is in use? What VOIP provider are you using?

It used to give a busy signal, but now it rings and rings. So yes, I didn't describe the problem well. I appreciate your response. Any idea why this might have changed? It happened probably a month ago. The VOIP provider is Sonic. Thanks very much.
