Did you check to make sure the batteries were properly installed, polarity correct? You said you receive calls, can you talk to whoever calls? You also state same issue with another phone. Same model? If so battery display same and no dial tone? What service are you using? If digital try resetting the modem. That won't change the display issue though. If you have a plain corded phone try it.

hi. verizon fixed the dial tone issue.

but why would the phone LCD show 'check battery' with fresh batteries? the phone line has nothing to do with the LCD/batteries.. happened on two phones, same model yes, batteries installed properly.  this is a plain corded phone with an LCD and takes (4)AA batteries. thanks.

Is it still telling you to check batteries?

no, LOL but i guess i am now curious how the LCD would be impacted by the dial tone.

I have more questions than answers. Did the LED give the indication when unplugged from the phone line? If it only gave the indication when plugged into the phone line and went away when they fixed the dial tone source then whatever was causing it was something in the connect the phone didn't like.  Is this a plain old wired landline or is this FIOS? If Fios than the dial tone source is from the Fios modem and that could have been the source. If you unplug your phone now and have no LED indication that pretty much proves it was something in the phone line.
