Land Line Called 911

Hi, I have a land line for my fax. Supposedly the line has called 911 for the past 2 nights and cops have been dispatched. Unfortunately, due to the holiday weekend my only resource for technical help is an automated voice. I need to address this situation ASAP according to police department. What can I do?!!!

You could disconnect your fax machine (and any other devices you may have connected) from the line until such time as you are able to reach technical support.  If it happens again, tell the police you've done all you can, and cannot reach the provider due to the holiday; that you've disconnected all your devices, it must be a phone company problem.

If disconnecting all your devices fixes the issue, then you have a problem with those devices. Of course, someone could be plugging a phone in at your NID, but that's not the way I'd bet.

Thanks for your comment. I did advise the officers that it must be a technical issue and I have reached out to ATT. I was told (automated response) there is an issue with the line. I have a tech scheduled to come out on 7/7, but from now to then, I'm afraid it will happen again. I have disconnected the fax line. I'm just blown away how the line is contacting 911. It's just frustrating I can't reach a breathing individual or an emergency customer service contact to address the issue sooner.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

Back in the day POTS lines, using dial pulse, if there were a line problem that would simulate mutilated digits it would default to 911, which is what I assumed happened to you. Basically, something is intermittently going short on the cable pairs that the central office is seeing as dial pulse digits, but can't make them out.

Thank you spoom2. I actually called a friend at the police department. He suggested I cut the lines coming into the home to avoid another 911 call. I really don't want to do that. I'm hoping whatever is going on it waits until Thursday when the tech comes out. Thanks for your info.

If you have an NID you can just unplug it. My guess is the problem is most likely in the phone company facilities.
