Complaint against At&T

I recently changed from AT&T to Comcast. The reason is AT&T was down in my area and the restoration time was 3-4 weeks, I work for a hospital and cannot be without internet service.  JEA was restored within 7 hours and comcast the next day.  I called customer service at AT&T and advised them that I have moved to Comcast and I want to transfer my land line to Comcast. Rather than releasing my home number they disconnected my service.  Due to this I could not get my number transferred.  I have had this number about 25 years.  I have spoken to no less than 35 times to AT&T and each time they promised to restore my service so the number could be transferred.  Due to the above AT&T has released the number in their system to be reassigned to another AT&T customer. I cannot tell you how upset I am.  If anyone reads this please and can help with this issue Please forward a phone number to my email address and I will call. This issue has gone on now for over 3 weeks and like I said above I have spoke to numerous customer service representatives with no help. I call the number for AT&T Retires and a supervisor was to call me back 1 week ago and this has not happened.  I am going to post this complaint on

Face Book and any other location I can find.  [email scrubbed] if anyone from AT&T can help.

So let me get this straight you canceled all of your AT&T services and once canceled you wanted to recover your home phone number, which had already been reassigned to someone else?

AT&T doesn't reassign phone numbers very quickly so some time had passed between the time you canceled and the time you signed up with Comcast.  And anyone who signed up with a new internet service know that it takes several days if not a couple weeks to get new internet service installed.

I know you don't want to hear this but you're being unreasonable.  You should have transferred your landline phone number in order to preserve it to a cell phone or something. This is a bell that cannot be unrung.

It's not like AT&T can just go take the number away from someone else now.

It's too bad you didn't come to a public forum like this and ask before you canceled service how to preserve your phone number until your new service started and you could transfer it.

By the way anyone who has ever moved their phone service between service providers is going to see your complaint that you post all over the place and think you're a bit of a kook, and will know it's your fault for not planning better so that you could save your phone number.

I understand random people on Facebook can be ever so kind (not)

@maeposton  You referred to Internet and then your home phone line and yet this is in the Wireless forum.  Color me confused.  Without a bit more clarity, it's hard to advise you on your issue.

Bear in mind that this is a customer populated forum and all we can do is work with the information you provide.

@skeeterintexas  if you and I could get a nickel for every time someone posted a 'Wi-Fi' (internet) question in the wireless forum we would have a nice coffee fund...

First of all I did not cancel my service. AT&T cancelled it when I called and advised them that I wanted to transfer my number to  COMCAST.. They should have released my number rather than cancel. I know they do not reassign numbers right away I worked for them 37 years. HOWEVER as of today they said my number is out for re-assignment and they will not release it to Comcast. YOU MISSED THE WHOLE PICTURE. I called them the same day I moved to Comcast.

Sorry.  You said

I called customer service at AT&T and advised them that I have moved to Comcast

You can see where the confusion lies.  Did you CALL AT&T FIRST?

Yes I called AT&T  first and notified them that since they could not restore our service area for over 3 weeks I have to move to Comcast since they are doing same day restoral services.

@maeposton First off, the way to port a number from one carrier to another is to inform the port to company (Comcast in this case) that you want to port your number to them, they in turn will get the needed information from you and they will call the port from company (AT&T) of the intent to port the number if the port to company deems the number can be ported.

We have no idea how you approached AT&T or why they canceled your service, as you state, without your permission. If you feel you've been treated unfairly by AT&T than file an FCC complaint, that will get your issue to the corporate level and at this point is what I suggest you do.  You've exhausted what can be done through the normal channels.

First of all I did not cancel my service. AT&T cancelled it when I called and advised them that I wanted to transfer my number to  COMCAST..

This falls under distinction without a difference....

If you cancel service with AT&T, service ends at the end of your bill cycle.  Once your phone number is canceled you can't get it back.

You cannot transfer ownership or service on a phone number that is canceled. The number still has to be active, as in being paid for in order to transfer it. And if your phone line was tied to internet, as it can be, canceling your internet service automatically cancels your phone service.

You not knowing this is not your fault, but you could have asked. And if your phone number was that important to you you should have asked before canceling your internet and phone service with AT&T. As I wrote before there's nothing that can be done this isn't something you can undo
