unable to set up bellsouth.net account in gmail.

Am trying to set up my bellsouth.net account to retrieve messages in Gmail on my computer.

I am inputting my "user name"@bellsouth.net,   pop.att.yahoo.com,  port 995 and using yahoos 12 digit code for password. I also tried using my old bellsouth password. neither works.

Finally got Gmail to import messages from Bellsouth account.  Had to establish a secure ATT key and then use it as a password when accessing pop.att.yahoo.com  Was able to download all messages in Bellsouth.net account.  Am in processing of moving away from Outlook Express ,which -by the way- worked good with retrieving emails from several accounts ,and, MS discontinued support for. Now new MS outlook doesn't allow import from other email accounts! Don't know what is MS's mentality is!!??.

Thanks for help from all respondents-TY.

What do you mean by "retrieve messages in Gmail"?

It sounds like you're using an email client.  Which one?

Most clients require a Secure Mail Key, not a Yahoo special app key or the regular password.

I am using Gmail a which gives an option to receive messages from another external email account. I am setting up Gmail to receive emails from my Bellsouth account: I am attaching a photo of the error I get when I follow the process in Gmail

Ahhh, ok, I see what you're trying to do now.

There's a thread on the Gmail Community forums where this was discussed a couple of years ago.  Lots of finger pointing between Yahoo and Google and no real solution was agreed upon.

One user found a way to do POP with a Yahoo account and said you need to have Two Factor Authentication enabled and a Yahoo app password. Others agreed that it worked for them.

But since AT&T doesn't offer 2FA I think you're out of luck to get that workaround going.

We can help you regain access to your bellsouth.net email account, @BxD5Dy.

If your email address is linked to your AT&T Access ID, changing your AT&T Access ID password will automatically change your email password and vice versa.

You can reset your email password by using the forgot password option.

These are the steps:

  1. Go to att.com/myatt
  2. Select Forgot password?
  3. Fill out the password info.
  4. Choose security questions or temporary password and follow the prompts. If you choose a temporary password, we’ll let you know where we sent it.
  5. Create your new password.

You can update security questions and answers. It keep your account details updated in case you forget your password.

Follow these steps to get a text with your temporary password next time. You can set up text message for password resets.

Let us know if this helps.

Olajide, (ATT HELP employee) You missed the point!  I'm not having problems getting my email through AT&T. I use outlook express and get my Bellsouth.net email all the time-no problems! I use two Two Factor Authentication through my computer and Iphone. Its not a password problem!

Thanks for the clarity @BxD5Dy.

At this time, we do not offer two factor authentication as explained by the ACE guru @tonydi.

Please feel free to reach out again if you have other questions or concerns.

Sorry! In my last post I said I was using two factor authentication on my Bellsouth account- I'm not using 2F.  I'm using what I believe is OAuth where i use a 16 digit code as a password to get to ATT through Yahoo. I still am trying to setup Gmail to use to view my Bellsouth messages. Thanks for responses.

Hi there, BxD5Dy.

You're likely unable to set up your Gmail account to receive your Bellsouth emails because AT&T email forwarding was discontinued in 2018. There is only the option to forward other email accounts to AT&T Mail.

We recommend reaching out to Gmail's support team to see if they have a workaround.

Thank you again for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums team. If you need help with anything else, we'll be here.

Great catch, @BxD5Dy !  I would have never considered that Gmail needed the SMK.  I can confirm that this worked for me when I just tested it.
