tech suppport
problem accessing email. chat person indicated needed to refer to tech support. a mkcomputersupportservices called but there was no answer when we tried to call them back later. in the mean time, someone called and indicated they would work with the problem remotely. long story short, they claim to have identified a number of problems and would clean them up and contnue t protect the from attacks for fees for either a three year or a five year plan. we declined. another call following this were linked to something that claimed to help identified scams. even though the original contact was through att.com chat, is this a scam? what to do?

It's definitely a scam! Did you let anyone onto your computer remotely? If not then all you can do is to ignore the phone calls (or block the #s).
If you did then I'd definitely have someone look over the computer for any signs of malware or programs loaded in the background like remote access programs.
Do you have a copy of the chat where they said they'd refer you to some third party? As far as I know, official AT&T people would only refer you to their own paid support.

Can you point out the URL of the page you were on when you went into Chat?

Wow. Ok, thanks for the info. It still blows my mind that an official AT&T "support" rep would point you towards some outside vendor, one who was clearly trying to scam you. I think I'll push this up the line and see if someone can get to the bottom of this.

There's no chat directly on the att.com landing page. Can you look through your browser history (or retrace your steps) and perhaps find the exact URL where the chat was initiated? TPTB are concerned about what happened to you but because there are multiple ways to get there, they'd like to see if you can pinpoint where you were when you clicked into Chat.

sorry. you hit upon a problem when someone tries to get help from the dot.com. one is apt to try multiple ways to find something that pertains to the problem they are trying to find solutions. the pop ups do come on in many places. the browsing history had been deleted many times so there is no help there. thanks again.
