New password won't work in Apple mail (ios and macos)

I changed the password for my snet.net email account and tried to enter it in my Apple mail snet email account on my iPhone and on my Macbook.  In both cases, after I entered the new password (and I'm sure I entered it correctly, because I cut and pasted it) and clicked on Done, the device said "verifying" and then came back with an error message that said "Unable to verify account name or password".  When I go to my online snet email account, the account name and password work just fine.  How do I resolve this?

Hello @tlynch44, we're happy to help with signing in to your email on your IOS and Mac.

Use these steps to set up your email for the first time or on a new computer. First clear your cache and cookes and then follow these steps:

  1. From Mail, select Mail > Preferences.
  2. Choose Accounts and then select the + (plus sign).
  3. Select Add Other Mail Account and then Continue.
  4. Complete Add a Mail Account info:
    • Full name as you want it to display to others
    • AT&T email address (YourName@att.net)
    • Password – enter your password or secure mail key
  5. Select Create. The account will automatically configure and appear in the Accounts list.
  6. Close the Preferences window to begin using your email account.

Already have your email set up, but want to update your settings or add your secure mail key? Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Select Preferences > Account Information.
  2. Choose your mail account.
  3. Select POP3 or IMAP.
  4. Confirm User name.
  5. Enter your password or secure mail key.
  6. Confirm or enter the following settings:
    • Incoming Mail Server - inbound.att.net (POP3) or imap.mail.att.net (IMAP)
    • Outgoing Mail Server - outbound.att.net (POP3) or smtp.mail.att.net (IMAP)
  7. In Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit SMTP Server List.
  8. Confirm:
    • Server Name - outbound.att.net or smtp.mail.att.net.
    • Use default ports - 25465.
    • Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is selected.
  9. Select OK
  10. On Advanced tab, confirm:
    • SSL checkbox is selected.
    • Authentication field is set for Password.
  11. Close window.

Thank you Alasani.  Your response got me to the correct answer which is that I had to create and use a Secure Mail Key.  A Password won't work anymore.
