Moved country and cannot access email via 2 set authentication

Hi - I have a @bellsouth.net email account which I obtained when I lived in the US. I have since returned back home in the UK and have continued to use the email account. I have used this account for 16 years.

I was recently bombed out of the email and now AT&T has asked me to verify a 2 step authentication by wanting to send a text message to a phone that I no longer have or use. It is my old US mobile\cell number.

I can access the AT&T account and update my password, but cannot find our how to change the Zip code and phone number linked to the account.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

We understand how important it is to have access to your email account, and we'd be happy to help with your 2-factor authentication @grainey2017.

We'd recommend checking out this information on adding wireless number as a recovery option

If you do not have an AT&T Wireless number, then these are the steps you'd follow:

  1. Go to Profile and sign in with your AT&T Mail address and password.
  2. Select Sign-in info.
  3. Scroll to My linked accounts and select Manage email.
  4. Select Edit user information.
  5. Enter your wireless number and check Use this number to reset your password.
  6. Select Save Changes.
  7. Complete any final steps sent to your wireless number within 24 hours. Text message rates and other charges may apply if you don’t have an AT&T Wireless number. Check with your plan and provider.

The phone number that is used will need to be a US-based phone number, or the verification code will be unable to be sent. If you do not have a US-based phone you can enter in, you can always submit 111-111-1111 as the number. You won't be able to use the text method to recover your email, but it will let you get to the point to where you can select the email as the recovery method.

Let us know if this helps.

Hi there, grainey2017

Thanks for letting us know that you were able to implement our 2 Factor or Trusted Sign-In authentication recommendation. We do appreaciate it. Also, thank you more marking our solution as accepted

We do want to give you some additional information. You did state that you moved to the UK. Now our recommended solution does require a wireless phone number. That is a US based wireless number. UK phone numbers are longer then US numbers. So unless you still have a US based phone number that is on roaming, please do not update your email profile with a phone number ,because it will only accept a 10-digit number and not a UK cell phone number, which is longer.

Again, thank you so much for posting with AT&T Community.
