Login Fail

I have 2 att.net email accounts. One of them is working, but I can't log into the other one. Confident I know the user name and password. This is the error message I get:

"Looks like you’ve tried to sign in unsuccessfully too many times. Recover your ID or reset your password to continue.
Care Code: 205.2 [LU003]"
Tried resetting password, but don't remember the security questions and it gives no other options

We can help you sign in to your email account, robotwizard.

A common solution for this care code is to sync your email account in our system. To do that, we'll need to gather some personal information. Let's meet in a Direct Message to get started. Please check your Direct Message Inbox (it’s the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums).

In the meantime, clear your browser's cache and cookies to remove your stored password information. Sometimes, having passwords stored for an extended period of time causes sign in errors.

Talk to you soon.

What they don't want to tell you (and probably why they hide in DMs) is that if you can't answer the secret questions or there's no cell # to send a code to, you can't reset your password.  And AT&T, following what is actually good security policy, won't just give you a reset without being able to authenticate that you are the true owner of the account.

Bottom line, you're not getting back into your account.

BS, they can send it to my other AT&T email. The security questions don't even come up

What proves your working email address belongs to the same person as the non-working one?  Even if one is a sub-account, my understanding is that they haven't agreed to fix it in those cases either.

If you've had the accounts for any length of time, there were no secret questions back then.  Yet some of these old accounts have answers on file.  Some have cell phone numbers tied to them, even though the cell numbers don't match any of the ones some of the account holders have ever had.  The whole database is fubar'd, which is clearly part of the issue.

I've had these accounts well over 20 years. You are correct, there were no security questions. I know I have correct password. This is THEIR system screwup!!  And what proves the phone numbers belong to the account owners. This is just another scheme to harvest personal data

The phone number is (supposedly) the one the initial application for the email account went to for verification.  So the account belongs to whoever has that number.  Now, as I said, the db is all messed up so there's no guarantee the number is right.  But at least AT&T can rationalize that when deciding to send a reset.

Scheme?  By Yahoo/AT&T?? I have no idea how that scheme would work or why they would do that.

When Yahoo and AT&T are involved, I always fall back on Hanlon's razor which is "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity".

Still can't login. I checked my records, this account never had security questions....I've had it for well over 20 years!

Yeah, I can confirm that they never had secret questions back in 2003 when I got SBC DSL.

Plus, we've already seen enough people who do have secret questions and have records of their answers say that they still fail to pass that test.  Same with cell phone numbers on accounts that never had a cell number even close to that.
