Can't delete a "bellsouth.net" email account.

Several hours trying to delete an old "bellsouth.net" account. Several hours with instructions that are not even accurate and hours with a help desk. They don't have the ability or knowledge on how to delete the account. Same answer... Wait 60 days without touching it and it will automatically be deactivated. I get 20 spam emails per day and want to just delete the account.

I finally go through a few screens and am asked if I really want to terminate the account. But every time I enter my email address I receive the following. And I have tried this for multiple weeks. HELP!

"Uh oh, looks like something went wrong. Please try again later."

Hi there, @kellydoug3. We understand that you would like to remove a very old email address. We can help you with that.

A couple of things before we get started. Is this email address the primary email address? If so, then please use the steps located in our Delete Your Email Account support article.

Here are the steps that you need to follow:

  1. Go to Profile.
  2. Select Contact info.
  3. Select the Email tab.
  4. Under Free AT&T email account, select Manage. If you don’t see that option, your email account can’t be deleted.
  5. Next to Member ID, select Delete Account. Select OK.
  6. Confirm that the Status at the bottom of the User Information section now reads Disabled. Your email account has been deleted.

If this email account is a subaccount, please log in to the primary account, and follow the steps located in this Create and Manage Subaccounts support article. When you go to this article, expand the "How do I disable or enable subaccounts?" section of the FAQ.

Please update us if you have any other questions.

Thank you for contacting AT&T Forums.

@kellydoug3   Apologies in advance since I don't have an answer to your question and from what I've seen in these forums ATTHelp runs out of ideas if their boilerplate "answer" doesn't work (and that's common).

But I'm just curious because I do see quite a few people who spend inordinate amounts of time trying to delete an account like you are.

Why do you want to do this rather than just forget it exists and never log back into it?

Oh, and ignore the statements that inactive accounts get deleted after some period of time.  I've got a couple of Yahoo accounts I created last century as "spam collectors" and every once in a while I'll log in to one of those after many years and they're all still there.

It is a "spam collector" for sure! The only legit contact tied to this is AT&T and I am resigning myself to just letting it sit like you did, but am irked that a 60 day hiatus apparently does not delete it either.

My real reason is that when I go back in to check it after one week and over 100 emails, it tells me I exceeded my login attempts. AKA, someone is trying to hack into my account.

And AT&T does not seem to care that I am a targeted individual and thankfully not a victim yet.

AT&T - Please understand I am capable of looking up the support articles. I am looking for a way to avoid privacy theft and there is apparently no way to do that with your teammates on the phone either. I spent almost an hour and they just kept reading the support article to me.

If there is another way to request an account to be deleted, please do share.

Ahhhh, ok.   Look through the list of posts in this forum and you'll see many hundreds of others relating to login issue.  HERE is the official explanation but there's no fix in sight.

I don't get the dreaded '205' as I can reset the password and it works for that day (or few days). I did finally get to a page that asked me if I really did want to terminate the account. Everytime I do, it says something along the lines of "Ooops, something went wrong, please try again later".

I did just send an email to the privacy team. Throwing spaghetti against the wall...
