Yes you can keep your email account. The email becomes a free email.
Note that your account must be good standing and with free email, you won't be able to create sub-accounts.

I have a similar question. We are moving and our new house doesn't have ATT&T services available at that location which I find quite puzzling since the home builder sales rep said they are pulling fiber in the neighborhood. It nice to know that I can keep my att.net email after being forced to switch to comcast/xfinity. Anyway my additional question is if I have an existing sub-account which I believe is my wife's email address will she lose hers in the process of switching?
