Keeping sbcglobal.net email account AND SUB-ACCOUNT after cancelling DSL service

I know this has been answered many times before... but this is with a slight twist.

My wife and I have att email accounts which are also Yahoo accounts.  My account is the main, and my wife's is a subaccount.  I'm pretty sure I can cancel and have my email account stay intact through Yahoo without a problem, BUT what happens to my wife's sub-account?  Since it is also a merged Yahoo account, will it also stay intact.

If I cancel all this stuff and my wife loses all of her email (as well as an email account that she has had for well over a decade) she will NOT be happy, to say the least.

From AT&T support:

Although you still get access to many of the great email features, if you aren't an AT&T High Speed Internet or U-verse customer, you can't get a few things.

  • Access to Internet Security Suite (McAfee)
  • Free AT&T Wi-Fi access
  • Permission to create subaccounts or POP/FWD mail for email clients if you created your att.net Mail account after June 2011
  • Live customer support

Although you can keep your AT&T related email accounts, the only support after 60 days is automated web-based support. So keep your passwords and security question answers handy. As well, if the account gets "broken" then you pretty much out of luck because you will not be able to call AT&T or Yahoo about it.

If you did "merge" your previous Yahoo account with your AT&T account, then follow the directions below for un-merging (from AT&T support site). Otherwise, if you're not interested in keeping the AT&T and/or Yahoo account and just want the messages from the inbox folder, then use a third party POP client like Outlook, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, etc. to download the messages to your computer.

Unmerge your AT&T and Yahoo! email accounts

If you have an AT&T email account that was merged with a Yahoo! email account and your AT&T service has been canceled or disconnected, you can still keep your Yahoo! email address by unmerging your accounts. To learn more about merged email accounts, visit Understand your merged AT&T and Yahoo! IDs.

Your AT&T email address, which is also referred to as your Member ID, can have one of several domains, including att.net, sbcglobal.net, bellsouth.net. If you are unsure about your email domain or Member ID, visit All about your Member ID.

Delete your AT&T Member ID and keep your Yahoo! email ID

Follow these steps to unmerge your accounts and keep your Yahoo! ID:

  1. Log in to myAT&T with your AT&T Member ID.
  2. In the User Information tab, to the right of your Member ID, select Delete Email.User Information tab precedes Manage Sub Acounts tab. Delete Email follows Check Email
  3. The Delete Email confirmation displays. Select Ok.Message confirming you are deleting
  4. Although the message in the box says that all your information and messaging associated with the account and all sub-accounts will be deleted, this is misleading. This action will only delete the AT&T email address itself, and you have not lost any email, contacts, or other information within the Yahoo! side of your account. Your Yahoo! account still exists in mail.yahoo.com, and you can continue to use the Yahoo! email address.

5.  To continue using your Yahoo! mail, sign in to Yahoo! mail. Select the Unmerge button in the bottom right corner of the page.

Unmerge IDs with sub-accounts

If you have sub-accounts, it's important to unmerge or transfer data from your AT&T sub-accounts before you unmerge your master AT&T Member ID from a Yahoo! ID. Failure to do so will cause any merged sub-accounts to be automatically unmerged, and any sub-accounts that are not merged with a Yahoo! ID will lose their data and preferences.

Important Note

Once you unmerge a Yahoo! ID from an AT&T Member ID or transfer the data and preferences from your AT&T Member ID to a new Yahoo! ID, you will not be able to remerge your Yahoo! ID with an AT&T Member ID.

I'm trying to do the same thing.  But I the link "delete email" does not appear, only the "check email" link.  What does this mean and how can I proceed?

I think I must have a merged account for the sbcglobal.net because I can log onto it either thru att.net or yahoo webmail.

I'd really like to convert to a different ISP but would rather not lose access to my sbcglobal.net email.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Sorry, Joe, but there's NOTHING in my account settings that matches up to this.  This must be outdated information, yet I see it continually posted as the "solution" to this issue.

My user information tab looks similar to what is pictured, but when you click on the tab, it goes to a separate page that looks different, and in no area is there some option to delete my email.

In addition, nowhere on my Yahoo Mail home page is there an option or link to "unmerge" my accounts.  Nowhere in the user options that I can tell.

Basically, my only option at this point is to go ahead and cancel my service and pray that everything works out.  This is like ATT's final kick in the nuts on my way out the door - risk losing two email accounts that I've had for nearly a decade now.  Thank you AT&T.

How bad has it gotten when Comcast is my preferred alternative to AT&T.  COMCAST, FFS!

Sounds to me like the most compelling reason to never merge your Yahoo e-mail with AT&T in the first place. And a shame, when the solution one moment, is NOT the solution at a later time.

No doubt,a way to un-merge the two accounts will be figured out at some point, but does not really help at this moment when ya need it.

At least, if nothing else, you are helping the rest of us who were considering doing the account merge to re-think it.

I wish you luck, and hope you can at least get the yahoo account name back, if you DO have to take the route of deleting the account completely, and having to try to recover the account name on yahoo.

How did this turn out?  Were you able to keep your email accounts after canceling your AT&T internet service?  Any hints, warnings, advice?

The accounts are yours to keep, even after discontinuing service with all.

Downside, you can't make sub accounts, you lose the macafee anti virus program, and you can only get automated help with the accounts as you lose live support. (mosdtly, make sure you keep your password and security questions and answers handy., as you would be lost without them,)

Other than that, they are just like any other e-mail accounts.

have fun.

I recently married a sbcglobal customer and I am an ATT Uverse customer. I transferred services whereas she cancelled. Will she still be able to retain her sbcglobal account? The transfer was effective today...install complete

As long as her account was closed with no outstanding balance, then yes, she should be able to keep using her account, as you have probably already discovered on your own.

Here's a slight twist. I have a bellsouth.net email sub-account not linked to any service. (My mom created the sub-account for me years ago when I was in college. Now she notified me a few days ago that she's ending all AT&T services.) This sub-account was/is merged with or a part of Yahoo! My quick yes or no question, when she cancels all of her AT&T services, will I lose my sub-account bellsouth.net email (as in deleted)? Thank you for any help you can provide

I forgot to ask: if my mom, the Primary email holder, doesn't log in to her primary bellsouth.net email address to keep it active once she cancels services and reverts to free, but I do regularly log in to access my sub-account, does that mean that her inactivity will end/delete my sub-account? Once again thank you for your time and any help you cash provide.
