at&t password changed. No cannot use Outlook 365

after getting a new cell phone, I went to the at&t page. It wanted me to change my user name to my email or phone#. So I chose my email address and it prompted for a new password. This changed my email password since my account and internet account got linked.

I can access my email through yahoo just fine after I changed the password.

However Office 365 would not accept a new password and the test to connect to email failed. I read somewhere that you can delete your profile and re-enter it, so I deleted the profile through windows settings and added it back. Outlook prompts me for a new profile name, which I gave it. I filled in my email and new password and the connection still fails. So I cannot even open Outlook now.

Any advice?

Hello @Nan2007,

Let’s get you back into your email.

Recently we enhanced the security measures of AT&T Mail, when accessing your E-mail with E-mail apps across different devices you will need to use Open Authentication (OAuth) or a secure mail key.

You mentioned you were using Outlook which is a Non-OAuth compatible E-mail app. With that being said you will have to go with the secure mail key option.

To create a secure mail key we will follow these steps.

  1. Go to Profile > Sign-in info
  2. Select the E-mail account that you want to get a secure mail key for (You’ll find a drop-down menu at the top if you have multiple accounts)
  3. Scroll to Secure mail key and select Manage secure mail key
  4. If you have more than one E-mail address, select the one you want to use
  5. Select Add secure mail key
  6. Enter a nickname for the secure mail key to make it easier to recognize
  7. Select Create secure mail key
  8. Select Copy secure mail key to clipboard. (Jot down your secure mail key, so you have it handy if you have to update an E-mail app on several devices)
    • For security purposes, the secure mail key only shows until you select OK
    • If you lose or forget the secure mail key, you can create new secure mail keys as needed.
  9. Select OK.
  10. Go to your preferred E-mail app and replace the existing password with your secure mail key. (For an IMAP account, delete the existing password for both the IMAP and SMTP servers and replace them with your secure mail key.)

We hope this helps @Nan2007, please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

  • Follow the instructions that KaneB has outlined above.  You need to create a new account key.  For situational awareness, you can use one of your old nicknames to create the new key.  It doesn't care.  Write down the new secure mail key and/or copy it to the clipboard.
  • In Outlook 365, go to File, Account Settings, Account Settings, select the mail account you need to update (if you have more than one) and select repair.
  • Once the repair dialogue box opens, select advance options, click on the "Let me repair my account manually" box, then select the blue "Repair" bar.
  • Enter the secure password key into the Password box and click next.
  • Close all dialogue boxes and you're done...!
