What cable do I need?
We want to upgrade our UVerse service from 6mbps to 50mbps (previously that high of speed was not available to us). The current cable we have says it is a cat5. We know the tech could do the wiring but we would prefer to do the portion inside the house (from modem to wall jack and in the crawl space) ourselves.
What wire do we need to run for the higher speeds? Is our current one (cat5) ok? I called tech support and they said “green broadband DSL cord” it’s called “RJ14”. A quick internet search tells me those might be two different things? I’m also reading that we probably need a cat 5 or cat5e cable. Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks!

Hi @jbryant1234, we will be happy to clear up your concerns.
You can use Cat-5 cable for 1 Gb speeds, and you can used cable longer than 100 meters, but because the standard has not been tested for it, you’ll probably have mixed results.
Category 5 cable was revised, and mostly replaced with, Category 5 Enhanced (Cat-5e) cable which did not change anything physically in the cable, but instead applied more stringent testing standards for crosstalk.
You are ok for for an upgrade to 50 mbps.
