New customer insatallation fee for copper, free for fiber, even when fiber not available
I am an at&t retiree. I suggested to three family members to switch to ar&t. One is finally doing so at a savings of 40.00/mo. They ordered thinking the installation would be no charge, not realizing that the no charge for install only is for fiber. It is not their fault that at&t doesn't yet offer fiber in their neighborhood (far north side in Chicago). Is this a way to attract new customers, who through no fault of their own, must pay for installation of slower and arguably less reliable service because fiber is not available. The free install promotion should apply to both fiber and copper. I doubt that households were fiber is available are asking for copper. Yet if so, then of course the installation fee is appropriate as its more expensive to install and support. But where there is no choice, and you are trying to attract new business, the playing field should be level.
They are still swithing. The payback with the reduced monthly charge is only about 2.5 months to recover the install fee. But that works two ways. The company can waive the fee for copper as well, and quickly absorb the install fee with the new customer's revenue.

Fiber installs are also $99 just the fee is waived. Self installs are $35.
For most I generally consider the REWARD card to be used to cover the installation.... if receive $100 reward with $99 install still up $1.
As the current desire is fiber choice is wait for if and when available or continue with installation.
Past 2.5 years with Covid have seen many work from home and virtual schooling have (2) ISP for when either has a problem. The installation of $99 is small compared to days without internet and lost income or education.

Thanks much. Perhaps there should be a reward card for copper, when fiber is not available. Does at&t really want customers to wait for fiber availability before switching to at&t? It might encourage people to switch if the same perks were available across the board. Waive the fee for copper.
