My internet is absolutely atrocious.

Over the last month or so my internet has taken a nose dive, going from an amazing 600-800 Mbps download range to an atrocious 20 Mbps with (if I'm lucky) 200 Mbps, I pay for 1 GB wifi, I am using an ethernet cable, everything I own related to wifi can handle 1 GB wifi, but when I download a game off of steam (or other platforms) my internet just doesn't, can anyone please help me.

Let us help with getting your internet speeds back to normal BigManderin.

  • Have you tried rebooting your gateway? That can help with getting your internet speeds back to normal.
  • Also, where is your gateway located, is there any other devices nearby? This will help us determine if any devices could be interfering with your connection.

In the meantime you can take a look at our article's that goes over Your internet enviorment and  how to increase internet speeds.

Please let us know so we can better assist you.

I restart my router 30 minutes ago and same result, It's located in my basement on top of a coffee table near a bookshelf with a tv above it. I am pretty much as far away as possible from it in the house but I use an ethernet cable.

Steam measures download speed in megaBYTES per second, not megaBITS.

We understand how important fast internet can be for gaming, @BigManderin

We recommend trying our internet troubleshooting steps to see if they improve your speeds. These can range from a simple reboot, to factory resets, and more.

You can fix many common internet issues by restarting your Wi-Fi® gateway. Here’s how:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of your gateway or modem. If you have:
    • An internal battery backup, remove it.
    • DSL service, unplug your telephone cord from your modem or gateway
  2. Wait 20 seconds.
  3. Put the internal battery back in, if applicable.
  4. Plug the power cord back in. If you have DSL service, reconnect the telephone cord.
  5. Wait up to 10 minutes for the gateway or modem to restart and your Broadband light to turn solid green.

You may also want to try running a speed test so you can compare the speeds you get normally with the download speeds of Steam. This will help us determine if Steam is causing the slow speeds, or if it's a technical problem with the gateway.

Please let us know if this helps! It may be necessary for us to get a tech out there if it doesn't.
