Wifi range and signal strength
I just had fixed wireless installed in my home. The installer put it in the basement toward the middle of the house. When I checked internet speeds, I noticed the speed near the modem was over 20 Mbps Download and only 8.42 Mbps in my office (where I need the speed). Is there a repeater I can use with this? I have an airport extreme. Can I somehow configure that to work as an extender? Would it be best to have the installer put the modem in a different location?

The router should be in a centrally located area and preferably in an area where there is the least amount of interference. A basement is usually not an ideal location.
I stopped using my AEBS some time ago and purchased a mesh WiFi system (router and one wired satellite). I tried to setup the old AEBS as an extender for an upstairs room at the opposite end of the house by placing it in bridge mode. It did work but the speed/reliability increase was minimal. I opted for a plug-in extender (not wired but uses WiFi for the back channel) from the same router mfr and the results were excellent. It could be that the AEBS just doesn't play nice with some routers or is just too old. All you can do is try.
