Trying to set up a wireless router at a remote campsite

Hello all-I am trying to figure out how to get a strong internet connection at a new campsite we have for the summer. My AT&T cell service is not great with one or two bars....my iphone hot spot is not cutting it for working/video calls or streaming tv. I am wondering if I use a AT&T wireless internet router and an external cellular MIMO antenna if that will get me a better signal. I also assume I need to contact AT&T to set up the service for this device. I read some posts that talked about a sim card as well...not sure if I need to deal with that??

Looking for any guidance the community can provide. Greatly appreciated.

Hey @sntbone. Sorry to read of the trouble you are having with your connection while at your campsite.

We can't guarantee 3rd party equipment like the MIMO antenna, so it may work for your phone, but you want to check with the manufacturer with the antenna.

Losing your mobile signal is never a good thing, Learn what may be the cause of this and check out the information below! Check out the rural, quick fix and environmental factors in the forum.

Rural Areas

Just to inform you, rural areas tend to have weaker signals. One of the reasons is the distance you are from the towers. This means your home may get a weaker signal compared to the center of town. The reason is the tower may be optimized for the center of town since more people tend to be there.

Normally, the signal is not an issue in rural areas. But when it is, a key factor to think about is the terrain. If you are in a hilly or mountainous area, you may experience a weak signal. The reason for this may not just be the land, but also whatever ground elements are there.

To use your AT&T wireless internet router you will need an AT&T data only plan for your router and get it set up at the nearest store.

Feel free to let us know if you need further assistance.

Thanks Devin for the response and information. I am hooking it all up in a couple days. Do I need to physically take the router to a store? I cant set it up over the phone? Will let you know how it works. Thanks again.

Hello sntbone, we're here to help with your wireless router.

You can take the modem to the AT&T Store to be set up https://www.att.com/stores/ please make sure that it is an AT&T branded store. Not an authorized retailer.

Good Luck! We had the most excruciating experience at an AT&T "corporate" store trying to do pretty much what you want to do. We have a camper with a peplink router/booster and simply needed a data only sim card(prepaid). I swear to god it's like they had never heard of such a thing. 3 HOURS LATER we finally end up with a sim card and a registered prepaid account but for the life of me I cannot get access to the account to manage payments. Everything just takes you to your Direct TV account if you have one.  I am SO irritated right now with AT&T!!  There's some number I finally called but it's just a recording trying to get you to buy medical equipment! Click on a link for "support" and you're taken to Direct TV!!! AT&T prepaid billing? You think that would work, right? Nope! I'm about to lose my mind.  Good Luck
