I want to buy a gateway to replace my 2Wire 198. Is that possible, and will AT&T configure it to my current internet service?

AT&T internet service requires the use of AT&T leased equipment.
You cannout purchase to own a gateway. No matter where you get it, that equipment remains AT&T's property. Plus they charge you the monthly rental for it. Naturally because of this, there are no 3rd party gateways allowed. It must be AT&T's to begin with.
If you are having problems with your gateway or such, please provide details of the situation so other users can try and help.

Juniper, we've had fiber for 3+ years and no matter what the AT&T technician have come out and done.... we still can't rely on it. We quit calling about it because we just got tired of the technicians telling us.... oh, it'll be fine now! Currently I have unplugged AT&T's internet connection and am trying out a t-mobile gateway for the last 3 months. We're not 'thrilled' its setvice, but it's as dependable so far as the AT&T internet service we've had here... plus it's a lot less money with no contract.
So good luck to others!
