Do I have to use the ATT Gateway if I have ATT TV?

I know the answer is yes for U-Verse, but hoping I can replace the Gateway with a Nighthawk or other aftermarket combo. Would it be as simple as plugging in & setting up per the instructions?

You must use the ATT provided gateway/router. You can not replace it. You can use your own router behind it but you can’t replace it.

Any idea where I can find step by step instructions how to do set up the router behind the Att Gateway? I am not particularly adept at this sort of thing & want to make sure I get it right the first time!
