Configuring AT&T Fiber with Netgear Orbi

Hello,

I have AT&T Fiber using an 2Wire 5268AC gateway. I also have a 2-node Netgear Orbi mesh network using RBR850 routers.

I have configured them both for the gateway to passthrough the internet traffic from the gateway to the orbi, but I've been using old documentation from users in these communities that are inconsistent and often refer to small and large differences in settings.

The result in my configuration is frequent disconnects on my devices. When I temporarily enable the gateway wifi and connect devices to it, the connection is more consistent but it can't use it permanently because the gateway wifi won't extend to the whole house.

Also, not sure if this is related but both the gateway and modem show speedtests at almost the 1GB speed, but all my devices show only arounds 200-300 MB.

Does anyone have good and recent procedures for configuring my desired setup?

I'm not very interested in any advanced routing. I just want my devices to connect to the home network and the internet.

Thanks

We are here to help point you in the right direction, mmwillingham.

We suggest that you contact our paid support team, known as tech 360. They will help you with any third party network questions.

Also, you can contact Orbi support as they will help you with why it is always disconnecting from the network.

If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach back out.

Thank you for choosing AT&T.

I am having a similar issue but my ATT modem is a BGW320 not the Gateway. I went through the "passthrough" setup from these directions: http://www.devonstephens.com/how-to-enable-ip-passthrough-on-att-bgw320-505/ Then my wifi (Orbi RBR850 - Wifi 6 Router) is set up in AP mode rather than Router mode. My problem is my company uses sites for project management and approvals that have fairly tight encryption protocols and won't allow me to upload files unless I switch my VPN on so that an IP address is given to my system. I'm guessing the IP address is hidden behind the Orbi so it's not seeing it and deems it possible dangerous. The problem is the VPN slows my download and upload speeds down significantly.

You don't use IP Passthrough when your third party router is in AP Mode.  If you want to use all the features of your Orbi setup, put it back into Router.  If you can do without some of the extra features it offers and just need to extend your wifi coverage, turn off IP Passthrough.

If the Orbi is in AP mode, that's fine and desirable since you can't truly bridge the gateway. I run mine this way, btw.

Your VPN issue needs further clarification. Any client device connected to Orbi should work just as if were connected directly to gateway.

I currently have it set up like this
Nokia BGW320-505

In IP Passthrough Mode
Wireless is off on 2.4 and 5

Orbi RBR850
in Router Mode

I just lost speed and my Sonos in this setup.

Okay?…

What purpose is running the Orbi in router mode doing for you?

And FWIW, Netgear is not immune to firmware blunders.  Their support forum is also helped by customers like us ACEs.   Things like rolling back firmware or factory resetting is part of the deal with their stuff, so best to be on the lookout.

I don’t know, man. I’m just here looking for help. I’m telling you how I currently have the devices set up. Read it on another thread. Followed the directions. Everything seems to be running well. But if you have a definitive answer with directions on how to set up the two pieces of equipment I have running that will maximize the speed, security and reliability of my home network I am all ears/eyes.
