AT&T Air and Hulu live

Have people simply dropped hulu or AT&T Air to solve the IP issue? I've just installed AT&T Air and now having constant problems with the "home" reset because of the changing AT&T IP address on AT&T Air. Do YouTube or other streaming services have this same problem with AT&T Air, or should I drop AT&T Air? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi @B84t375,

We apologize for the frustration, but we did find an answer for you on this issue.

There are sometimes issues with services that use geo-location based on IP addresses, which impacts wireless home internet subscribers because the gateways are often not in the same market as the subscribers they serve - which also impacts other carriers as well.

Hulu Live TV is the most common example.  The only fix for this issue is to contact Hulu and give them your actual address. Hulu can put in an override - which will survive as long as your IP address stays the same (basically, as long as you don't reboot your CGW or have an outage of some kind.)

We understand this isn't ideal, but this would be the work around to resolve the issue.

Thanks

I recently switched from my basic AT&T internet plan to Internet Air. I've had no problems streaming Hulu until I got Internet Air. But, now, about every 8 days I am getting a message on Hulu that says I am not at my home location. Each time I've called Hulu to correct the problem. It appears that the issue is that my IP address is changing.

So, is it true that my IP address with the Internet Air is continuing to change? If so, how am I supposed to use my streaming apps like Hulu without changing my home location every 8 days? The service only allows you 4 changes to home location within a year. Thanks for any help you can provide.

ATT AIR FWA is similar to ATT Fixed Wireless and G.Fast used  in select MDUs… that is an upstream device receives the public IP address and downstream devices receive a private IP address from a pool. Referred to as CGNAT, your particular device IP address is not assigned to you but to the pool of the unit that provides the service resulting in IP address changes.

FWIW, Hulu knows all about this problem (CGNAT) with their method of keeping track of where you are via IP address and is "actively working to rectify the situation". I personally know that they've been actively working on it for at least 4 months now because that's how long I've been complaining to them about it. Other services that track your IP address to figure out where you are will have the same problem. (I live in southeast Texas and have been in the same place for 30 years, but my current public IP address puts me somewhere in the middle of Oregon.)

We recently switched to AT&T Air.  We are now having issues with Hulu Live recognizing our "home".  Are they incompatible? They have had to override our IP address several times.

You do not have a public address on ATT Fixed Wireless (antenna based system since 2017 using 4G LTE) or ATT Fixed Wireless Access using 5G with no $99 installation or data cap.

Both cellular internet services are CGNAT receiving a private IP address from a pool in the upstream device that has the public IP address.

It will constantly change, if desire a public IP need to have hardwired internet service or perhaps satellite internet if rural.

DON'T GO SATELLITE! It (Edited per community guidelines). It was all I could get for a decade and I was ecstatic when we finally got DSL out here in the boondocks. And now I've got AT&T Air.

Your problem is that Hulu checks your IP address every time you start it. And because this is broadcast 5G (using cell system) your IP address changes when the tower shifts lower-priority loads and internet is Low priority. Hulu Live is the only streaming service I've had an issue with. I've had to call them 4 times in the past 6 weeks to get the Hulu app reset, and every time I've spoken to them, I've complained about them not being able to handle modern technology and not trusting their subscribers and thinking about going to YouTube TV, etc. Every time they have told me that they know about the issue, are working diligently to fix it, and should have fix out "real soon".

OK, here's how it went: AT&T said it can't help me. Nothing they can do about it. Big failure. Sending the egg back pronto.

No, not ideal at all! In fact, I didn't have to wait for a reboot or power outage -- it only took an hour or so and the service flipped me off, literally and figuratively. I had several go-rounds with Hulu over this. They resynced my IP and home addresses, and then an hour or more later the local channels would disappear. Hulu's only solution was for me to contact AT&T and see if they could resolve this constant churn in IP address. And as I say here, AT&T threw its hands up and said "we're working on fixing this issue, but we haven't fixed it yet." I wish I had known about this problem upfront -- would have saved me many hours of aggravation. Plus, I would have actually been able to watch the basketball games I wanted to watch.
