$40 Internet Speed Rip-Off!
Hello, I'm Hunter.
My grandfather is paying $40 a month for his wireless connection. I have a desktop computer built for gaming, and I have ethernet set up for even faster speeds. The speed is so outrageous I know we're getting ripped-off, want to know why? Because they're seniors, and you know what people do to them, because they don't know much about this knew technology.
So let's get to the business.
My download speeds are 900 kb/s or down, upload speed is 100kb/s or lower. NOT mb/s, kb/s. Not to mention, they're paying $40 A MONTH! $40 a month will get you a 25 mb/s download speed. He's had this speed for a VERY long time, so he's been losing money for something he thinks he's paying for.
If this is TRUE, please help me prove it to him by showing me images of payments for $40 speeds, or some evidence that will prove to him that he's getting ripped-off.
If this is FALSE, please excuse my foil/rude language, I do not mean to offend anyone, I just do not like being ripped-off, especially one of my loved ones.

Do you know what tier they subscribe to? Is this U-verse or AT&T DSL?
Can you check whether or not U-verse is available at their address? Check the link below.

(if it says there's a current account, then click option to set up a new account, it won't do anything)
If they're currently on DSL and want to upgrade to U-verse, they can likely get a promotional offer by doing so.
You can also have them call 800.288.2020 and see if sales are able to do anything for them. They may be able to give them another promotion. It's just a lot less likely if they're on AT&T DSL compared to U-verse.
Also, just to be clear. Are you talking kb/s or KB/s? There's a lot of difference between the upper and lower case.
If it was 900 KB/s, then that would be equal to 7.2 Mbps.

They have U-Verse, yes. But I checked availability and it said no.

Are you sure it's U-verse then? What's the model of their wireless gateway/modem?
Also, make sure you check what their tier name is and report back. Also confirm that you saw 900 kb/s(Kb/s) or KB/s. Check the capitalization.

The model is 5031NV (5021NV-030) then there's fxn next to it.
EDIT: How do I check what tier it is? And yes I'm sure it's 900 KB/s.

You can check the tier by checking their bill or going onto their account online using their AT&T ID and password.
If it's 900 KB/s, then that would mean it's 7.2 Mbps.

7.2 megabits, shouldn't it be megabytes not bits, 900 KB/s is about .9 megabytes.
And it should be 25 not 7.2.
EDIT: I mean mB/s not mb/s.. Sorry about that.. I'll have to discuss this in about 12 hours, going to bed. Thanks for the help so far.

There are 8 bits(Kb/Mb) to a byte(KB/MB)
That would be 7.2 Megabits(Mb) or 900 Kilobytes(KB) or .9 Megabytes(MB).
The speeds that are advertised for tiers are in Megabits(Mb)/Kilobits(Kb) while when you download something online, you typically see it in Megabytes(MB) or Kilobytes(KB).
The tiers that are available on U-verse are 768kbps, 1.5 Mbps, 3 Mbps, 6 Mbps, 12 Mbps, 18 Mbps, 24 Mbps, 45 Mbps, and 75 Mbps. There are also gigapower tiers.
Once we know what tier they're on, we can check to see if they are getting the proper speeds and if they're eligible for an upgrade. We will also be able to determine what kind of possible promotional pricing they can receive based on that info.

It tells me I get up to 6.2 megabits, I always thought that the plans went with megabytes not bits. Sorry for assuming, thank you for the help. I don't know how to check the tier though.

As I mentioned earlier, the tier name should be listed on their AT&T bill.
You might just want to have them call 800.288.2020 to see if they can give them a better speed for the price or if they can provide them with a better promotional price.
Not sure how old your grandfather is, but you have to remember that those of older age(not all, but a majority) along with a few others, don't really care about speed as long as it's reliable and cheap.
