AT&T Fiber La Mesa CA 91942

Waiting for fiber roll out to reach 91942 and replace VDSL2 50Mbps service. Like to upgrade to fiber from Cox coax internet. Friends in downtown San Diego have AT&T 300/300 Mbps fiber and pay less for the internet then we do for Cox 300/10Mbps.

No one knows if or when fiber will roll out to you. That is not something At&t shares with the public or front line employees

While exact timeframes are unknown…

ATT has less than 30 months (2.5 years) to complete the 2nd five year (2021-end 2025) adding 15 million addresses within 100+ markets located in 21 states to the 15 million completed 2016-end 2020.

With about 8 million to be added out of estimated 38 million hardwired Uverse platform addresses means have a 1 in 5 or 20% chance will have direct fiber by Jan 2026.

While the company has made no statements, I do believe there will be a 3rd 5 year build out (2026-2030) that will likely be total 10 million addresses added (2 million per year instead of past 3 million average over years). This should complete all FTTN addresses where internet 25 to 100 is currently option along with continuing NEW GREEN field fiber builds.

A big issue is all the ISPs wanting to deploy fiber but a limited number of fiber construction workers (contractors / their employees) to meet the demand resulting in increasing labor costs associated with fiber builds.
This along with global demand on source materials and ISP labor shortages to complete installations means likely a 600 WEEK (11.5 years) before I expect fiber slowdown at which time the older fiber (20 years) will likely need to be replaced result is ongoing fiber construction as fiber is not as durable as the copper has been over past 100 years.

Anyone looking to enter the traditional building trades now have fiber installer/technician to add to the in demand future workforce considerations.

@my thoughts  Funny thing since I left engineering I’ve been contacted twice with a job offer as a premtech 🤦‍♂️

@Constructive

I have been contacted by TDS who is expanding their fiber buildout here in SE Wisconsin in cities ATT is slower to build out in. Those cities have lower population totals and lower density (large lots). TDS is the parent company of US Cellular.

The 600 weeks I referred to above is the timeframe I am hoping to still be alive,  in 11.5 years or January 2035 I will be 77. If not for the cold winters (below zero  with wind chills) and all the pole climbing I might have tried to work as a tech for a few more years.

However after heart attack (May 2018) resulting in quad bypass and hernia and kidney stones in 2022, I felt it was time to retire at 65 years 4 months. There are days I have considered returning to ATT if something less strenuous was available, in the meantime I picked up part time position at local Home Depot store in the Electrical/Lighting department as my wife still has 4 more years before retiring.

@my thoughts  I applied at Home Depot. I went in for a face to face interview and they said I was overqualified I guess I need to pad my resume.
