Is it necessary to rent the wireless gateway from AT&T?

I have a LinkSys EA9500 router. Is it necessary to rent the wireless gateway from AT&T? Or can I connect their inbound internet signal directly to my router. The router does have a designated port for incoming internet.

I will continue to use my router, even if the answer is yes. However, the customer service rep sounded as if she was not technically savvy, and at first said no, then yes, then said that AT&T will provide their gateway even if I don't order it.

yes the at&t gateway is what validates/translates the service by communicating with the ONT and theres no way to get out of the equipment fee

Well, not what I would prefer to hear. But it is what it is. It would be nice, though, if the customer facing customer service personnel were educated enough to provide a direct answer. Rather than three different response, which have the effect of reducing confidence in their statements.

That being said, perhaps you can answer this for me. As my device connectivity will be through my router, is it possible to disable the WiFi portion of the gateway provided through AT&T?
