Will a Pace 5268AC Gateway & ALCATEL-LUCENT G-240G-A ONT support Gigabit Fiber?
I currently have U-Verse with 25M internet and Fiber to the Prem. I am interested in upgrading to 300M or even 1G internet but I want to be certain my current hardware will support it. As I mentioned in the title, I have a Pace 5268AC gateway and a Alcatel-Lucent G-240G-A ONT. I tried, a few years ago, to upgrade to 100M service. However, when AT&T activated the higher speed service, I wound up with no internet service at all. AT&T could not determine why the service did not work but claimed the hardware should have supported it so I ended up back at 25M. I'm hoping this problem is either resolved by now or a non-issue with 300M or 1G.
Also, does anyone know if 100M internet service requires the use of all four pairs of a Cat 5E cable (specifically from the ONT to the gateway)? I know gigabit networks do, but I thought T100 networks can get by with just two pairs.

The 240 ONT GPON is installed and supported by the core tech (outside lineman group) as supports up to (2) POTS lines....
Uverse techs install and support the Noika 010 GPON, the 020 XPON using either the 599, 5268 or 210-700 gateway as all 3 offer dual band wireless and (4) T100/T1000 ethernet ports.
As the 240 is outside my scope, I suspect your issue with the past upgrade is your still on a BPON splitter which offered speeds similar to ATT FIRST BONDED PAIR gateway the 3812 aka iNID with separate power supply and indoor unit.
If correct on the splitter BPON was initial limited to internet 18 and later upgraded to internet 25.
For the higher fiber speed tiers of internet 50, 100, 300, 500 or 1000 need to be on a different splitter at the PFP. This would require a tech appointment to at least replace the splitter and likely have to re activate the ONT for the new service.
As this would be performed by UVERSE appendix techs which would likely involve changing out the ONT to the 010 which is GPON while keeping the 5268 gateway.
Note if your placed on an XPON ONT, the 5268 gateway would need to be replaced with a 320 and the correct SFP connector.
To answer the question, to my limited knowledge will require a tech installation upgrade for a minimum of splitter change at the PFP with possible additional work / replacement being required depending on you assignments which would not be known till order the service.
Recommendation... order upgrade service, during the tech initial arrival discuss your concerns, depending on answers can either cancel the upgrade (no work performed) or continue with the upgrade work.

100baseTX only requires 2 pair.
I don't understand your fixation on the existing equipment. If you need different equipment, AT&T will provide it.

Thank you for the technical answer about 100baseTX.
My concern with the equipment is simple. I don’t want to have AT&T come out and change equipment. If I can’t get the higher speeds with my current equipment, I will go elsewhere. But if I know I can get the higher speeds with what I have, I’d rather go that route.
