Speed is NOT what they say

When I use the APP on my phone (SmartHome w MyAT&T) and run the APP speed test, I always get 995+/-5 Mbps download and upload. Every time. If I use SpeedTest APP or Speedtest.net I get numbers all over the board, sometimes as high as 600 Mbps and as low as 25 Mbps, but never close to 990 Mbps. Anyone understand what the deal is?

Hey @lucecannon,

We'd like to help you with your inquiry. Speed test are run different depending on which one you use. Speedtest.net is an Ookla run speed test. They discard the highest 10% and lowest 30%. They also use multi-thread technology to run their speed test. Which can skew results.

Running speedtest through our AT&T which will give you the best results.

Let us know if this helps.

the smarthome app is running a wired steady from the gateway to the att network. The speedtest app is running a wireless test to a server. WiFi speedtest will never achieve 900 plus. Different server locations and times will get different results. See below for my WiFi results at different times to the same server.

Use the wired windows speedtest app for true speedtest results or the Apple TV speedtest app.

Whats the point of having a fire hose to your house, if the AT&T gateway to the web is just a watering hose? Seems like 200 Mbps is perfectly adequate as seldom does Speedtest show a result higher than 200.

I agree. But all AT&T offers now is 1000 mbps. They used to offer 100, 300 and 1000 for fiber customers. 100 was plenty for my home But I had 300 since it was the same price as 100. I’m actually paying less for 1000 than I was for 300 so I upgraded to 1000. We will never understand the rationale for only offering 1 fiber speed option.
