Replace my Motorola BGW210-700 Gateway with a third party router

I am interested in replacing/upgrading my gateway with a third party router to gain better wifi in my house. I chatted with ATT for 30 minutes yesterday and they said they would email me a guide to do this. Of course, the email never came. Does anyone have a good guide on how to do this. I am only mildly technical. Thanks for any direction you can provide.

you cannot replace the gateway. You can install a wireless router behind the gateway. Either set it up as an access point and turn off the gateway WiFi. Or place the gateway in ip passthrough or dmz plus. The model gateway determines that. Bgw210-ip passthrough. 5268ac-dmz plus. Which gateway do you have?

I am going to purchase a router and mesh nodes to install behind my Motorola BGW210-700 gateway following these instruction for passthrough mode: https://www.att.com/support/smallbusiness/article/smb-internet/KM1188700 [MANUAL 1-10]. If I do that, will the ethernet ports on my gateway still work or will I be limited to the number of ethernet ports on my new router? Second, will the firewall be deactivated and therefore I need a router with a good firewall?

Thank you

@Guybrush_Threepwood you will manually turn off the gateway firewall. All wireless routers have firewalls and yes you should use your router firewall. Your gateway ports will still work. I would connect all wired devices through your router. Get as switch if you need more ports. Use the gateway ports for U-verse stb’s. Most mesh WiFi systems have a router in the main node. So no need to buy a router and mesh WiFi system.

I've also got a Motorola BGW210-700 gateway. I turned off the wifi, but have a D-link COVR mesh router plugged into it for the wireless. I'm getting half download speeds on wireless. I'm getting full download speeds wired straight from the gateway and from the D-link router, but wireless from the D-link I'm loosing about half the speed.

Do I need to change any setting on the gateway to improve the wireless speeds from the D-link mesh router?

What are your wireless speedtest results using the d-link?

About 450mbps. Wired is 900mbps

450 mbps wireless is acceptable. You’ll never get close to 1000 on wireless. Too many variables affect the signal. Devices, home construction, other network interference.

In my previous house wired and wireless had the same speed.

So you're saying that I don't have to follow the directions given earlier in this thread?

I don't have to turn off the firewall or go into bridge mode, etc...?

Follow the directions you linked to. Then turn off the gateway firewall and packet filtering.

In your previous house did you have gig speed? At our apartment I had internet 300. Got those speeds wired and wireless. Currently have 1000. I still get about 300 wirelessly. Device limitation. Not a gateway or router problem.

Thanks for the reassurance, even though I'm bummed that wireless isn't as fast as I thought is was going to be.

I'm trying to avoid doing much setup work.

What will I gain by jumping through the hoops in the above link and turning off the gateway firewall and packet filtering?
