Reliability of Fiber Internet

Our neighborhood just got cables for fiber internet.  They have a box at the end of my backyard, but the fiber has not been connected to my house from that box yet.  I have comcast internet and it is very reliable.  I am considering getting the AT & T fiber internet 500 plan.  How reliable is the internet service?  Some posts (albeit old) I see on the forum seem like horror stories.  Are they common/frequent?  Or those on the forum are relatively rare occurrences?  Just trying to figure out if I can switch now and not repent....

I’ve had fiber for 3 years. One outage due to my line being cut by electrical contractors. No other outages.

As with any online support forum, you're only going to see the problems.  Considering how many millions of fiber customers AT&T has, you only see a teeny fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent here.

I've had fiber for going on 4 yrs. now.  One outage for a few hours, supposedly a cut line but I don't think that would have been fixed in a short period of time so who knows.

I had Comcast for a couple of years prior to that and it was pretty reliable as well.

It's all down to a crapshoot.  One never knows when a drunk driver might plow over the box in your neighborhood that feeds all the fiber or a construction crew will dig where they shouldn't.  Of course the same fate could hit your Comcast service.

The nice thing is that you can try the fiber and not be tied to a contract.  If it turns out that you're not happy, call Comcast back up and switch back.  You may even get a deal as a "new" customer.  That's been my "backup" plan should my fiber ever go down and it looks like it might be a major outage.  I still have my Comcast coax ready to reconnect and I understand I can call up and have service again in a few hours at most.

Fairly recent (~6 months) switcher from Comcast to AT&T Fiber. Had Comcast for 15+ years and yep, it was rock solid unless somebody hit a pole.

Had some initial service hiccups that I mostly attribute to less than stellar installation of the fiber itself to the home. And then an animal (best I can tell) jumped on the fiber and took me down for a weekend.

Since that repair and re-run of the fiber it's been up for ~120 days with maybe a 5 minute blip in the overnight once.

I'd say the service is generally as reliable as Comcast. When there's an issue though my perception is that there are less advanced self-service tools and if there's an outage it's likely to require a truck roll which will increase your downtime.

The equipment you get (the gateway) varies from ok to decent but just as I did with Comcast I minimized what it actually does (I'm running my own firewall/router and wifi access points just as I did with Comcast).

Overall happy with the switch. I also moved to all streaming for television at the time -- the main reason for switching was financial, just couldn't come to a reasonable rate with Comcast. No regrets making the switch.

One thing I did which might be helpful to you is that I overlapped for a month and could switch back to Comcast with a couple cable changes and a router reboot. Might be worth it for peace of mind.

Agree with your suggestion of keeping comcast for a while to make sure the at & t fiber is reliable.
