Not Getting Full Gig...

Hello.

Switched from 500 to 1 Gig a few days ago.  We have a Pace 5268AC.

On the 500 plan, wired we were getting, on average, over 600 up and down. Apparently AT&T turned the speed up to make sure were getting the full 500.  WiFi we were getting about 450 up and down.

Now on a Gig, from my computer that has a 2.5 Gig Ethernet adaptor and plugged into the Router/Gateway we are getting:

WiFi is about the same.  I thought it would have been higher.  My phone is less than a year old.
The Router/Gateway's speed test shows:
Killer Networks shows me that the port on the Router/Gateway is only capable of 1 Gig.
Is that why I'm not getting a full Gig or getting above a Gig like I was getting over 600 on the 500 plan?
Can I request to get the Router/Gateway they would use if I had gotten either the 2.5 or 5 Gig plans?

That speed is acceptable there are people like me paying the same price for 6 down 1.5 up.

Speeds around 940Mbps are the max on a 1Gbps plan.  AT&T over provisions the speed which is why you got over 500 before but the 1Gbps Ethernet port on the AT&T gateways like you have or the BGW210 can't take advantage of that.

If you were to get the BGW320 which has a 5Gbps Ethernet port on it your computer would see over 1Gbps (don't quote me on this but I think it's ~1100-1200 Mbps).  That being said, there's really no way for you to get one of those because they're in super short supply and AT&T is keeping them for new installs, especially those on the >1Gbps service.

Your wifi speeds didn't change because they were already topped out.  If you have any Wifi6 devices you might eek out another hundred or so Mbps with the BGW320 since it supports Wifi6.  But, see above.  😟

Thank you @tonydi.  Would you happen to know if I bought a BGW320  if I could use it or would AT&T complain?

We're happy to answer your question about purchasing a BGW320 gateway, Zyxian.

While it's fine for customers to use 3rd party routers behind their AT&T gateway, purchasing an AT&T gateway from a 3rd party to use in place of the one that the installer provided would not work, as you wouldn't be able to have it activated on your account.

For more information on AT&T Internet speeds, check our online guide on Internet service levels and speeds, in addition to the information that Constructive  and tonydi provided.

If you have any other questions, let us know!

Contrary to what ATTHelp said, there are reports online of people buying these units from Amazon or eBay and they get them to work, some even saying AT&T helped them.  There are also many reports that they couldn't get them activated. Some of those people claimed the outfit selling these wanted a 30% restocking fee.

It's also not clear if these are actually still the property of AT&T,raising other concerns.

So it's pretty inconclusive at this point.  How lucky do you feel?  😁

What router do they use for the 2 Gig package?

@Zyxian

Are you even offered the 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps speed options at your location?

Note: your local PFP (Primary Flexibility Point) has to have an active XGS-PON Splitter connected to an upgraded XGS-PON OLT in the CO for you to see the addition speeds as an order-able option.

Is that why I'm not getting a full Gig or getting above a Gig like I was getting over 600 on the 500 plan?

AT&T Fiber is over provisioned by about 20% but in your case you are limited by the Ethernet connection of the ONT connected to your 5268ac as other have already indicated.

To get a third-party BGW320 to work you need lots of luck. There are 2 ways for it to be activated by AT&T on their network by them (AT&T).

1. Using the BGW320s internal ONT SoC and the SFP Optical transceiver that accepts a direct Fiber connection. No 1 Gbps Ethernet limit.

2. Using an external ONT like you have, however they are all limited to a 1 Gbps Ethernet connection.

As @tonydi indicated above the BGW320 and it''s 5 Gbps Ethernet port will only allow you about a max of 1225 Mbps if you have the internal ONT, SPF Optical transceiver and a very good 2.5 Gbps Ethernet card in your high end PC.

Nothing personal but I doubt your Killer Network card is going to squeeze out that last ~300 Mbps. You should consider a media converter and a Fiber 2.5 Gbps SPF adapter for your PC.

My phone is less than a year old.

Yes but it is limited to a max Wi-Fi 5 ( 802.11ac) of your 5268ac and any other slower Wi-Fi devices on your network. Wi-Fi is not full duplex it is simplex communication so you can cut your potential (advertised) speed by at least 1/2 for real life speeds.

Note: there is a new Nokia XGS-PON 020 ONT that has a 1 Gbps Ethernet port and a 10 Gbps port but that 10 Gbps port is disabled in the firmware currently.

Thank you @dave006

2 and 5 are offered as an upgrade in my account.  So I would hope/assume that those speeds would be available if they are an option displayed.

This whole thread has taught me, via searches, about new acronyms.

No offense taken.  I don't own Killer Networks et. al.  😂
Even if I get something that can output the +20% I will have to be satisfied with the 2.5 network card since my computer is a high end gaming laptop - no space for a Fiber 2.5 Gbps SPF adapter.

I'll just wait until I decide to go with the 2 Gig package and then AT&T will have to upgrade my Pace 5268AC.

Thank you all for you inputs.
