Modding the Arris BGW210-700

The Arris BGW210-700 is practically trash when it comes to its wifi because of the position of the internal antennas according to the logic board layout. Modding can increase the wifi coverage and I would like to make this happen. I searched online and found the logic board schematics and I see it only has 3 U.FL connectors to soldered directly to 3 copper ending which are the ones acting like antennas. These are facing the front of the stupid thing instead of all around to have a proper coverage.

If I opened the box and punched the case holes in the reference locations already marked by the manufacturer; would this void some sort of warranty? Would I get into trouble with Att by modding the factory moddable case? I want to increase the range of the wifi signal by adding high output external bi-directional or omnidirectional antennas without adding additional hardware since Att is being stupid about not letting us use our own router.

The BGW belongs to AT&T (even if you're paying a monthly fee) so they're not going to be ok with you hacking around in it.

It sounds like a lot of work for what will probably be a hopeless cause since I don't think all of the wifi issues are because of the antenna placement. There are tons of people in this and other online forums that have continuous wifi issues with the BGW (and the Pace gateway) even when their wifi devices are close to the gateway.

I think you'd be better served by doing something like this which will get you where you wanted to be in the first place.

That is a
Lot of work as well which will be undone should att reboot either the gateway or the ont. Also, that is adding extra expense of buying a dumb switch.

A lot of work? You're kidding, right? You were willing to break open a gateway and redesign the antenna system yet a handful of ulta simple steps that my grandmother could accomplish in 5 mins is a lot of work for you?

AT&T can't reboot the gateway because it's not there.

Yes, they could reboot the ONT but that's extremely rare. More common might be power outages which are less rare but if someone lives in an area that has frequent power outages then their electronics should be on a UPS.

A compatible switch is $18.

So if 5 mins worth of "work" and $18 is too much for you, by all means continue to live with your "practically trash" gateway.

In the past I have bought cheap ATT gateways on ebay and they work just fine. If you want to experiment, that would probably be the best way to go. If you totally brick the ebay gateway, you can just plug your old one back in.

You can use your on wireless router behind the gateway.

I want to eliminate the Arris gateway altogether and replace it with a high performance router. Or at least increase the output of the nearly non-existent wifi antennas by replacing them with high output one. That is how high performance routers do it anyways.
