Game Server Routing
So I play fortnite and my ping to the NA Central server is 65, I live in Louisiana and the server is in Texas, I thought nothing of it because I thought that was normal but my friend that lives in Ohio and also have att fiber has a ping of 25 and he’s way further away from the server than me, he on the east side. He said I should contact att to see if I could get a better routing to the Dallas server for lower ping because it’s no way he should have lower ping than me and I’m closer than him.

Hello, @SadlySorry, we are here to assist with ping rates.
We understand you are concerned about getting a ping rate of 65, while your friend in Ohio has a ping rate of 25.
Ping rates can vary between customers. For example, if you have multiple devices on at one time, this can cause high latency. Using a VPN may cause high latency. Uploading may cause high latency. Also, some sites do not ping at the same rate.
Learn more about ping rates.
A ping rate of 65 means you are getting great connection. You can also run a speed test to determine if you are getting the right speed for your internet service.
Let us know if this information helps or if you would like further assistance.

Hi @SadlySorry, thank you for reaching back out with additional information.
Sometimes when you game, you may notice high ping which could be caused by the game itself. The best way to test this is to stop playing your game and test. If your ping returns to normal, the gaming servers may be the issue. Turning off other devices and testing one at a time is recommended.
To determine if the issue lies with the game server, test another online game. If you do not see issues while playing the second game, there is a good chance the server is the issue.
The host of the room you are in can negatively impact the experience depending on their internet speed, the number of devices they have connected, and their home network. In some instances, a new host can resolve some issues.
We recommend running a traceroute to the server. This way you can determine if it's a game server issue or with the network itself.
As always, we will be here to assist, so feel free to reach out if you still need help.

I am having the same issue. I am located in Oklahoma and have a lower latency playing on East servers than I do on central. I have worked with att support several times for many hours and have not had any luck. I have also had my router replaced. I was getting 0-10 ping but a few months ago the problem started and has not stopped. I was getting 10-20 ping using a vpn but after the last call with att that had also stopped. I am unsure what to do.

Just to add- I am hardwired and have even tried disconnecting every wireless device which did not make a difference.

We understand good ping is a must for gaming, @alexissforrest! Let's get your internet running better!
We recommend checking out our article on understanding high ping/latency.
Can you let us know the exact range of ping you're experiencing? This will let us know how to proceed. We may need to run some tests on your network.
