Can new customers use their own routers?
I’ll be moving soon and saw AT&T covers my rate and wondered if I can use my own router?

@Venom443 You need to use the AT&T gateway (modem + router in one unit) and if you want to use a third party router connected to the AT&T box, you enable a feature in the AT&T box called IP Passthrough. We usually recommend disabling the wifi on the AT&T gateway and let your router handle all of that.
IP Passthrough is not exactly the same as what is commonly called Bridge Mode, where the ISP's box is essentially turned into just a dumb modem. It still does have its fingers in some part of packet processing but that's the best you're going to be able to get.

You can use your own router, but not the modem with the built-in router that AT&T supplies.

That makes sense so I would use their modem and then my own router but is it a two in one unit modem and router or is their modem and router two separate units that would allow me to swap their router for my own? Otherwise I would find myself having to connect their router to my router to make it work?

You connect their router to yours. Even if you could make your modem with a built in router work, (which is highly unlikely ) you'd still have to pay the monthly equipment fees. So why bother.

That makes sense thanks guys. I think I’ll play around with their router first to see what kind of customizing I can do and if it’s not very good I’ll make it a pass through and use my router.

We understand that you have questions related to can you use your own router Venom443.
As the aces tonydi spoom2 stated you can use your own router behind your AT&T router. Check out our article that covers connecting a non-AT&T provided router.
Please let us know if that helps.
