AT&T Fiber connection slowing down every night

So, I've had AT&T Fiber at my house for over 4 years now and it's been the best internet provider I've ever had, up until the past month or so. In the past month I can watch the speeds from my router (Amplifi Alien) to the ISP start dropping (Sub 100 Mbps) around 8 pm and the pings rise (~100ms) during that time too. I only noticed this speed issue because all my streaming services started to drop quality or completely stop for a few seconds to re-buffer. Usually it lasts about an hour to 2 hours (8-10 pm usually) and then slowly starts to ramp back up.

We've had our neighborhood grow quite a bit recently so I'm wondering if a larger number of people has something to do with it, but I've asked anecdotal questions of some neighbors and they've been seeing some of the same issues lately too.

I'm happy to run any tests and provide any data, just hoping to find the right outlet to get this addressed as the AT&T Support numbers don't really provide the right people to talk with for something like this. Thanks!

@DrVanNostrand you are seeing significant delays clearly within the AT&T Network.  I wish I had an AT&T NOC contact that I could go to and say "You have a problem in Raleigh between (2nd hop) and rlgnc22crs."  I don't.  And no way to get one.  ATTHelp might could push a ticket to the right place.  I'll point your traceroute out to someone else who might be able to escalate it.

@xtremeelement , if your traceroute/mtr/pingplotter looks good, there's not much we can refer to AT&T.  You might check with valorant support why the traceroute looks good when the game is having issues.  Maybe they did give you the wrong server IP; ask.  Sometimes the issue is the game server itself (but more than you should see that).

Im having the same issues with Internet performing slow starting at around 8:00p. I've had 3 techs out to my house and tell me that eveything looks good and that it could be my hardware going bad. So i purchased a new pci express ethernet card and experienced the same issue. My ping starts going up to 40-57 ping ms. But when it starts getting better im back down to 8-13 ping ms. I tried to see if I could get moved to a different port on the main junction box but its all full. Im issue started back in Aug 2022 and up to now still havent gotten resolved not sure what else to do. I can see the lag issues in Rocket League, World of warcraft and some youtube videos start loading slow. Already replaced the Modem/Router and same thing still going on starting at those time. Im in the Florida area.

Do a PING -t to the first hop beyond your Gateway (at 192.168.1.254).  Does the latency on that hop go up when your overall latency increases or not?

The problem is likely that AT&T's peering infrastructure is unprepared for all the new fiber subscribers during peak hours.

I am experiencing the same issue that others have commented on here. I have had AT&T fiber 1000 for three years, and starting in July 2022 I began experiencing a consistent decrease in Internet speed starting at 8 PM and lasting through about 10:30 PM. I can see this on a computer that is directly wired to the router. This is affecting my ability to do work from home at that time, work that requires a high speed connection. This is very frustrating. I have phoned technical support, and they provided the exact same suggestions recounted earlier in this thread. this seems bogus to me because everything was fine up until July 2022, and I didn’t make a change in my house in terms of number of devices connected or anything like that. Moreover, my Internet connection is fine throughout the rest of the day.

I also live in a new development, which is now near completion. Could this problem have a reason because more people in the neighborhood have signed up for AT&T fiber? I also live in Florida.

If I were to upgrade to fiber 2000 would it help me to avoid this throttling?

(a) Probably not, but (b) I wouldn't call it throttling.

re (a): It would only help if your issue is a capacity issue with the fiber that you share with others in your neighborhood from the PFP to the CO and if your upgrade required you to be moved from one fiber to another (e.g. if you are currently on GPON and as a result of upgrade were moved to XGS-PON, which would require you to move to a different splitter and thus fiber).  If you are already on XGS-PON at 1 Gbps, then upgrading will absolutely make no difference.  If the problem is not your GPON fiber, then upgrading will make absolutely no difference.

re (b): The connotation of throttling is that there your traffic is being limited despite available capacity.  This issue appears to be a capacity issue somewhere.

I am having the same issue for the last 3 weeks. My speeds are dropping drasticallly at night. The APP shows Im getting 1gb to the modem up and down, but the speeds that I am seeing wired and wireless are so slow I can't stream netflix. I can't even load web pages fast. I just had a tech here. He replaced the modem and a the wires and the same issues persists. He is very confused. Said he's going to talk to a supervisor in the morning...

It seems like any speed test that can connect to an ATT service is fairly fast, but literally anything else is extremely slow. I am having trouble just loading web pages.

I am currently using my hotspot on my phone with Tmobile because it's working much better then my Fiber Internet. My speeds finally dropped on the speed to the modem (500mbps). Speed of me is showing 0.4mbps. Xfinity speed test shows 300mbps down. Fast.com shows 400mpbs down. Testmy.net shows 2.7mbps. I am so confused.

Hey guys, just made an account to chime in.

I am also having this issue, near Raleigh-Durham. For the past month or so, around 8-8:45PM to about 9-10:30PM, my internet speeds drop like a stone. At first, I only realized it because my streaming services would buffer and shoot down in quality every night around the same time. But then I realized that my games would also take ages to connect to servers (BF2042) at that time too. At one point I actually tried downloading an NVIDIA driver update during this time and my download speed dropped to 100-300kbps. I did the Speed Test through Ookla on the browser and had perfect speeds (to AT&T Raleigh) and so did the internal speed test on the ONT. Outside of Raleigh, my speeds are 50Mbps max during this time. Ran trace route through PingPlotter and this is what the results are:

Obviously, something isn't right to and after hop number 5.
I called and they replaced my ONT, no effect. Tried using the BGW320 as the primary router, no difference. Using it as passthrough, no difference.
Any advice on how I can report or fix this?
Had Fiber 2000 up until today when I downgraded to the 1000 plan thinking it would help. Which it didn't.

I gave up on them. I switched to Xfinity and problem solved.
