Allocating an IP address with the AT&T router removes the device's descriptive name?

I hope I'm just missing something. Whenever I set up the router to allocate a static IP address to a specific device, the router then REMOVES the descriptive part of the name of the device. For instance,

With DHCP allocation:

-->192.168.1.78 / iMac

With a static allocated address, the same device gets renamed to:

-->192.168.1.78

This can't be right. Am I missing how I can assign a meaningful name to the device?

Well, now I've discovered that the AT&T router limits you to only 20 static IP assignments. That's the last straw, and I bought another router. Dealing with potential finger pointing if I encounter problems is better than dealing with this s****y AT&T router.

That shouldn't happen.  My BGW210 still shows the names in the IP Allocation table.  Which gateway do you have?  What's the firmware version are you on?

Oh wait, are you talking in the Device List?  Yeah, mine replaces the names with unknownxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

This is what I get:

Literally every other router I've ever had has allowed me to assign a meaningful name to the devices. Can this gateway not do that?

What gateway, what firmware?

I don't use it but I recall that you could name devices in the Smart Home Manager app at some point in the past.  I don't know if it still has that feature but even if it does, the name never carried over to the Device list in the gateway's UI.

And these gateways are not like every other router, they're "unique" in their inability to do simple things and provide a reliable base for a home network.

It's the BGW210-700. It says its software version 2.7.7. Yeah its really weird... there is stuff you can do in the smarthome app that you can't do in the router, like nicknaming, but that stuff doesn't show up in the router.

So yes, you can nickname devices in the smart home app, and you can see the IP address, but only if you drill down into the device settings. And there is no way to see what's getting assigned via DHCP and what's being served an allocated IP.

Irritating.

True although there is an allocated IP page in the BGW UI just like in other third party routers.  Even something like Fing doesn't tell you which devices are allocated in their regular device listing.  So I don't hold that particular lack against them.

You should be getting an updated firmware fairly soon for the BGW.  People are reporting a more widespread rollout of 2.8.7 in the last few days.

Ladies and gentlemen, please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts, we may be in for a bit a turbulence ahead!

Bump.

I can't use the port forwarding feature under firewall settings because my device isn't listed in the drop down menu (after allocating said device to static IP).

The only way I can get the device to reappear on the list is to set DHCP allocation automatically again (and releasing/renewing lease via ipconfig command in cmd).

Please fix this device name deleting bug ASAP.

EDIT: Seems there might be a residual effect from setting up the port forwarding prior to allocating device to static IP. Sloppy workaround. Still would be nice if this bug were fixed though. Thanks, Arris/AT&T!
