MicroCell service dead?

I have an original 3G microcell that I got back in 2010. I’ve had no issues and it’s been rock solid ever since. As of last week the 4 bars logo on it has just been flashing. The first light (power I assume) is lit like normal.  Then the satellite looking logo is lit, but the signal bars icon is for ever flashing.

Ive tried unplugging it, making sure it’s activated when I log on online to see.  I honestly don’t know what to do?

We we don’t have WiFi in our home, just hardwired connections, so no WiFi calling option for us.

Is is there a way to fix my current microcell?

I’ve read in here they’re phasing out 3G, that’s fine. But, can I just buy a newer 4G microcell off eBay and activate that? They aren’t phasing out 4G are they?

PS, I do not want WiFi calling at all.  🙂

There is no 4g Microcell nor is one planned. Microcell service is still active with no end date announced. After Microcell service is discontinued, WIFI calling will be the only option.

I’m sorry, maybe I misspoke?  I just know I have a extremely old microcell and they’ve come out with newer ones since mine. So, does anyone have an idea what’s wrong with mine?

if not, I’m guessing I could buy a newer used (smaller back model) one and activate it, correct?

@Locobooff  - AT&T has not discontinued the MicroCell service, yet. Sales by AT&T were discontinued at the end of 2017 because the MicroCell has reached its EOL. Service and minimal support will continue until AT&T begins to transition away from their 3G network. As @rjniles  mentioned, the MicroCell has always been 3G and there are no plans to upgrade to a 4G model. That last model produced was the DPH-154 (the black model). Functionally it was the same as the previous two iterations only with newer radios, a smaller footprint, and the removal of the Computer Port and external antenna port. You may be able to find one on eBay or CraigsList but there are caveats to that. I have a section in my Tech Guide (link is in my sig line) about purchasing second-hand MicroCells.

I would check the ac adapter with a voltmeter. If you are still using the original ac adapter it could be starting to fail or has failed. A solid green power light just means that current is detected. It doesn't mean that adequate power is being delivered. The ac adapter should read 16VDC +/- 0.5 with no load. If not, replace it with one of the same rating and see if that corrects the issue. If not, your MicroCell may have just died of old age. They can't be repaired so you'll need to find a second hand one somewhere.

Who is your ISP and did you have any power outages? You could try a hard reset following the instructions given in my Tech Guide.

If you don't have WiFi, or want to use WiFi, then your only other options are to purchase a cellular booster (see my Cellular Booster Guide, link is also in my sig line) or switch carriers.

NOTE: I took my MicroCells' offline over a year ago and switched to WiFi-C (WiFi Calling). Reliability and call quality is much better. However, as a test for someone else, I reactivated my DPH-154. It took about 30 minutes from cold storage to making/receiving calls so the service is still very much active.

Thank you so much. I’ll read your guides and troubleshoot from there.  Thank you.

@Locobooff - Good luck with a used MicroCell. You really need to start planning now for what you are going to do once AT&T pulls the plug on the MicroCell. Given AT&T's past history with the MicroCell, I don't expect them to give a lot of advanced noticed on the service termination. I highly recommend WiFi-C if you can. If not, your options are very limited.

Why do you not want WiFi-C?  Why throw good money after bad for another used Mcell that's going to be obsolete in the near future?  Spend the money on a wireless router instead and start using WiFi-C.  It's superior to the Mcell.

At least for me, I do not get non iMessages (green texts) unless I’m on a cellular network. Also, I don’t like the inconsistency of WiFi calling as well. I have friends and family who have WiFi and used it before. I just don’t like it.

UPDATE, I grabbed a used mCell off of eBay, activated it and a have had a full signal in my house ever since. I know eventually mcell will go away, but I hope it never does. Maybe I’ll get a landline from my local phone company when Mcell goes away. At least I’ll have reliable, consistent phone calls.

@Locobooff  - when our MicroCell's were setup, we never had any issues with sending/receiving messages to non-iPhone users. It may have been a bit slower but they always went thru so I don't really think it's the MicroCell per se.

As far as WiFi-C goes, it works much better as far as reliability and call quality here (we've been using it exclusively now for over a year). It even worked in our old home which was in a different state. I'd look at your phone settings and make sure that the MicroCell is powered off and WiFi Assist is not enabled on the iPhone. Some have reported issues when attempting WiFi-C with WiFi Assist enabled. That shouldn't make a difference but it's not a bad idea to disable it while you are testing out WiFi-C.

The MicroCell and WiFi-C both have two, in-common ports that they use so if there is an issue with one of those ports, that could affect the MicroCell and WiFi-C's reliability. Unfortunately, only your ISP can check and correct that. Who is your ISP and what kind of service do you have?

I have a 200mb cable internet line from Comcast Xfinity. I know you’re right, I guess I’m fighting the inevitable. I’ll have to look into my WiFi-C settings.

But for sure, I get NO (non iPhone) text without mcell. I tried logging into my bank account at home on my PC and they needed to send me a verification code to my phone. I had to walk outside around my driveway for a few minutes to get the signal and receive the text. Such a pain....

@Locobooff

Thats interesting because I get the exact opposite here at work.  I get all my text messages over wifi as I am on wifi calling and text all day at work because of how the building was made.
