Unlocking IPhone

I'm trying to unlock an iPhone that was previously tied to a corporate account that I don't have access to. It was a device I purchased that was tied to my work's ATT plan. I recently upgraded the work phone and deactivated the old one from the corporate plan. I'd like to unlock the older phone so that it can be used with another carrier. But when I submitted the IMEI number AT&T gave me the following response:

"Hmm...looks like there's an unpaid balance linked to your device, so we can't unlock it."

My employer is unwilling to help me unlock the device, despite the fact that I own it. Is there another way I can unlock it?

Your company needs to do it. Regardless if you bought it as far as AT&T is concerned the account owner owns the phone. If they aren’t willing to do the unlock your out of luck.

I don't know why, but phone's purchased by a business are forever tied to the business. Even as a non-customer, you are likely going to get a denial that the "phone cannot be unlocked at this time" , or that the "phone is tied to another account"

You can try an FCC complaint but it may come back to the same problem.

Locked to AT&T, the phone will still work on cricket, and many other AT&T mvnos.
