SMS over Wifi calling, IPhone X

I have ZERO cell service at my home. I used to use a Microcell which gave us good service. Our local ATT store told us to turn on wifi calling and get rid of the Microcell which we did but now we have no ability to send or receive regular SMS messages. The only people that can contact us are people with Iphones and imessage. The store said we should be able to use SMS as well. Any tips on how to make this happen?

Both SMS and MMS messaging works fine for me over WiFi calling and I have an iPhone. Not sure what to tell you as it should work. Is your WiFi calling actually enabled and working? You are not on WiFi calling unless you see “AT&T WiFi” on the display.

A lot of people think ‘wifi’ is WiFi calling/texting.  It’s not.

This is how you enable WiFi calling:   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203032

If it still doesn’t work, you have another problem.

My wifi calling is turned on, thats not the issue. The store even verified it when I brought the issue to them. My issue is purely that only imessages will work. Anyone using sms, regular texting does not come in or go out for us.

@dltvermont Do you have Send as SMS turned on in Settings > Messages and check and see is MMS Messaging is turned on in the SMS/MMS section.

By “turned on”, you mean you see “AT&T WiFi” on your display? If yes, can you make and receive calls?

@Fl_retire The “send as SMS” setting is only relevant when sending to another iMessage recipient. It does not affect incoming SMS messages or any message sent to a non iMessage number.

If you can make and receive calls via WiFi, then sms should also work.  If it won’t, there is something wrong with your phone.

Thank you for all the replies.

Update and more info.

First, with wifi calling works 'most' of the time. Everyone in the household has Iphones (5) and they all act the same way so saying its a phone problem doesnt really make sense.

Last night, after reading somewhere else, I tried turning on airplane mode while at the house. I was then able to send and receive regular text messages on my phone! I also received a call on my phone during that time. I passed on the 'trick' to the rest of my family and my daughter, who has the identical phone as me, could not use wifi calling, it came up with a message to turn off airplane mode to make calls.

Too many variables that just dont seem to make sense!

Actually it’s making more sense.  Airplane mode with Wifi on forces the phone to choose Wifi to send, rather than cellular.  Android phones have an option to choose Wifi or cellular, I’m not aware of that option on iPhones.

Well I thought I had it figured out but last night even the airplane mode fix didnt work. When I tried to text or call it would say turn airplane mode off or wifi on (wifi WAS on and full strength as I was able to use internet). I beginning to think its the wifi system itself (Google wifi). Ive read that Eero works well with ATT service. Either that or switch to a regular wifi router and ditch the mesh system altogether.

Once again, if you don’t see “AT&T WiFi” on your phone display, you are not connected to ATT’s mobile network and not on WiFi calling. Just being connected to WiFi is not enough. Yes, the problem could be your home network. Try rebooting the phone. When my phone won’t connect to AT&T WiFi, a reboot often helps.
