SIM & PUK failure

I am stuck in a circular (Edited per community guidelines).

After upgrading to iOS 16.0.1 my iPhone X would not accept the PIN to unlock my SIM card.

I got [Create PIN for SIM Card]...choose a new PIN code

Next screen said [Enter PUK for SIM card] ...your SIM card cannot be accessed.  Please call your carrier to obtain your PUK code and 10 attempts remaining.

This led to [Create PIN for SIM card]...choose a new PIN code.

Which brought me back to [Enter PUK for SIM card]...10 attempts remainig.

I could find no solution on the AT&T site and no number to call.

Did you try these instructions?

https://www.att.com/support/article/wireless/KM1011771/

DETAILED STEPS

How to unlock a SIM with a PIN unlock key (PUK)

  1. Go to your account overview and open the My wireless section.
  2. Scroll to My devices & add-ons and choose the device that needs a PUK code.
  3. Select Manage my device.
  4. Under See device options, select Get your PIN unlock key (PUK).

@sandblaster  That article is wrong.  That option is not listed under device options, either on the website, or in the app.

@Sandblaster - My wife and I spent almost an hour trying to follow those directions and came to the conclusion that they simply do not work.

Searching Google for help, we came across a long thread on this subject where others tried to follow the directions that Sandblaster posted.

Answer was:  "We'd advise you to visit one of our nearest retail stors to assist you further".

Fortunately there is one about 30' walk away and I will be at their front door when they open.

I have been toying with leaving AT&T for Mints and if this is an example of AT&T's support, I am going to make the switch.  It is appalling that you can't call someone!

We went to the Bethesda AT&T store on Elm St.  and Sophie, the gal on duty there squared us away.  She switched my iPhone X to an AT&T eSim, and pulled out destroyed the physical SIM AND I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE SIM PIN under cellular settings.
