range for tethered devices
Let's say Mary's iPhone has the Unlimited Elite plan. William would like to tether his laptop using her mobile hotspot. Mary wants to go shopping. How far can she go and not break the tether to William's laptop?

Not far. The range for a mobile hotspot is measured in feet, not miles. The connection will probably drop before Mary is out of the driveway.

Also if the plan is you stay in the car while she is in a store, then that would probably lose signal by distance and/or interference with the walls and everything between you.
