Online Purchase Attempt

I attempted to add an iPad using the AT&T online, to an existing service/line.  After navigating through all fields, it provided the pricing for a whole new line, not added to the existing line.  I called AT&T sales and was advised that the iPad has cellular capabilities so it has to be purchased on a new line, however, I was then advised I can call Support and ask them to switch this new line, to my existing line, which would decrease the pricing/billing charges. I asked why it could not be done at this time, and was advised that Support has a different application which allows a fix to this “glitch” as it was called. I declined, as I was not going to sign a contract for a full New line. No rational person would do this, as a contract is binding.  I find it hard to believe that a company like AT&T does not have the resources to fix this “glitch”, or system limitation.  Or you have sales reps who are providing false information to close a sale.  Either is pretty bad.

To my understanding, I thought that I could purchase the iPad and add it as a 2nd line (with its own number).

Ok, in most cases that is true. Whether or not you can add an iPad line to an existing plan depends on the plan. What plan do you currently have? If you have a grandfathered plan, it is very possible you can’t add an iPad but most plans should allow adding an iPad as a second line.

As noted, ATT only sells cellular iPads. If you want to buy one from ATT, you need to add a line for it. If you don’t want cellular data service, don’t buy from ATT. There is no contract, you can cancel the iPad line anytime you want but if the iPad is on a payment plan, the balance owed will be due. You may be able to convert an existing line into a data only line for the iPad but why bother. If you have a line not being used, cancel it and add a new line for the iPad. You can’t add the iPad to an existing line that is being used for a phone, if that is what you are wanting to do. Each device on your plan must have its own line. You can’t have multiple devices assigned to a single line.

Yeah, that makes sense.  Then why would a sales rep advise that I can have support switch the iPad over to my existing line and this is a known glitch?

Who knows. Sales agents say many incorrect things. Perhaps they didn’t understand what exactly you were wanting to do.

@sandblaster I do understand what you are explaining. My issues were with the statement from the sales rep, and the functionality of the online site.
To my understanding, I thought that I could purchase the iPad and add it as a 2nd line (with its own number).  However, I was told it had to have its own plan, not a second line.  So 2 services.

@sandblaster This was a great explanation and the info I was missing. I don’t believe it is grandfathered as I got this service in 2018, but I will ask when I call them.  Seems like a change to my service may fix the issue, and allow me to add the iPad as a 2nd line.   I appreciate your help.
