How to convert physical sim to esim

I am currently using a prepaid AT&T plan with a physical sim with an iPhone 11 and with WiFi is connected.

I try to go to setting - cellular - convert to esim.

However, iPhone told me there was an error. unable to perform the action.

What should I do?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello hendricks27, we're here to help you convert your physical SIM to eSIM.

You can convert your physical SIM to an eSIM following these instructions:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Cellular.
  3. Select Add Cellular Plan.
  4. Select Convert to eSIM.
    • Convert to eSIM screen appears advising their plan is associated to a physical SIM that can be converted to an eSIM.
  5. Select Convert Cellular Plan.
    • Convert eSIM message displays advising customer once SIM is converted to eSIM it can be removed from the SIM tray.
  6. Select Convert to eSIM.
    • Cellular settings screen appears, the phone number (cellular plan/eSIM) displays in the Cellular Plans section with “Request Sent” indicator.
    • The screen refreshes and the “Request Sent” indicator changes to “Activating”.
    • Once activation completes the “Activating” indicator disappears.
      • The physical SIM will be listed in the Cellular Plans section with “Converted to eSIM” indicator.
  7. Complete test call to confirm service is working.
  8. Discard physical SIM in old iPhone (it is no longer active).

Reminder: iOS 15 allows customers with a physical SIM to move their rate plan to an eSIM without contacting us for assistance. If customer has an upgrade in process, they must first complete the activation of their new iPhone. Once that is complete, they can convert their physical SIM to an eSIM via Settings. Refer to Convert (physical SIM to eSIM) or Transfer eSIM on device iOS 15 or later for additional information.

Otherwise please call Customer Care at 1-800-331-0500 (or 611 from Mobile Device)

Let us know if this helps, and thank you for contacting the AT&T Community Forums.

@ATTHelp The OP already tried.

@hendricks27 Unfortunately, the convert to esim function doesn’t seem to work with prepaid as I’ve seen many other complaints. Unfortunately, I’ve not seen a fix either. Too bad ATTHelp couldn’t provide that.

@ATTHelp

As a matter of fact, I did exactly what you described before posting this. And I tried rebooting and removing sim and put it back in and in a different wifi network.

None of those works. And I am pretty sure I am using the most recent iOS.

Thank you for your comment.

We appreciate the update, @hendricks27. We can work together to figure out why you're unable to convert your SIM to an eSIM.

Let's meet in a Direct Message on this. Please check your Direct Message inbox (it's the chat icon next to the bell icon in the upper right corner of the Forums).

In the meantime, you can try resetting your network settings. From the home screen, select the Settings app > General > scroll to and select Transfer or Reset iPhone > select Reset Reset Network Settings > select Reset Network Settings again to confirm.

We'll chat soon!
