Delayed notifications from apps & messages

For quite a few weeks I’ve been having an issue with delayed notifications. The first time I receive the notification it will say something like “5 min ago” or “9 min ago” etc. The time varies, but they are intermittently delayed. I cannot make it happen on demand. It is happening with apps and text messages. I am also having an issue where my iMessages will be received delayed and will also come through as a text message and iMessage. It doesn’t matter if I’m on Wi-Fi, 5G, etc. I have been to Apple 4 times, have gotten a new SIM card and have gotten an entirely new phone. Nothing is helping. I have reset the phone, tried restoring from a backup and restoring from Apple ID. I have gone through every diagnostic and settings option possible. Apple is saying my only next step may be to start over with a completely new Apple ID in which case I will have to start over brand new. Has anyone experienced this or have a solution? Thank you!

A new Apple ID makes no sense at all.

If you suspect there's a security issue you can always change your Apple ID password and set up two-factor authentication to make sure someone else isn't using it and collecting your notifications before you get them

Given what's going on it sounds like your phone is not connecting properly to any network. The first thing I would do is test by swapping the SIM card with a family or friends at&t iPhone and see if the problem continues with their SIM card and service.  Or does the problem now occur on the other phone using your sim card. If the problem follows the Sim and your service then it's definitely an AT&T issue. If the problem continues to occur on your phone even though you're using someone elses Sim and service then the problem is definitely a faulty phone.

Apple warranties your phone for one year. If you are outside of the warranty. You would have to deal with the repair cost directly with Apple.

Hmm okay. I don’t suspect there is a security issue, but I did already get a new SIM from AT&T and a new phone from Apple (I was still within my first year) and the problem is still happening. I haven’t tried anyone else’s SIM in my phone, but everyone else on my phone plan is not having any issues.

I have had the same issues with AT&T and even got a completely new phone only to have the problems persist. Apple says everything is fine and it’s the carrier with the problem but AT&T can’t seem to figure it out. I know a couple other people having the same problem.

I'm having this same issue as we speak, the Apple Store/Genuis Bar is going to replace the phone but now I'm reading with the comment above that did not fix it. I'll likely just move from AT&T to Verizon.. this is rediculous.

One thing I noticed is if you go into Airplane mode, and turn off all cellular services all messages will come in instantaneously without the 5-10 minute delay. Obviously, that will not be helpful outside of the house/wifi but it does limit the issue to the provider (AT&T).

Yeah after I got my new phone it was so weird because things were working for the first couple of days (or so I thought) but then it started happening again. I have actually tested using my sons phone to FaceTime my phone with both phones in my hands and the FaceTime call never comes through. There’s no focus settings tuned on and all notifications are turned on etc. Nothing has changed on my end. The problem started happening about a couple months ago. It’s so bizarre and frustrating that nobody can figure out what’s going on! I am ready to kick AT&T to the curb as well but unfortunately just got a new phone to try and fix the problem so now I’m sort of locked in. I don’t know anyone else having this issue with other providers.

That is interesting. Have you tried putting the phone into Airplane mode and connect to wifi only, then make the FaceTime call? So far, it's the only thing that has worked for me. Judging by your name, I assume you're in AZ as well? I wonder if this is specific to this area. I'm in North Scottsdale for what it's worth.

I am also in AZ and live near Tatum and the 101. I have this problem all over town though,  so whether I am home or at work in old town Scottsdale area etc. It doesn’t seem to matter if I am connected to 5G or Wi-Fi but I haven’t tried turning on airplane mode while connected to wi-fi so I will try that next. If that works then I think it’s pretty obvious the problem lies with AT&T’s cell service. Thanks for the tip.

Please report back if Airplane mode works for you. Yup same here. I travel up to Anthem a great deal and the issue persists there as well so it's def not just a tower issue. I'm supposed to be getting my name phone today and at this point, I don't even know if its worth it. I am curious what device you're on if its an issue specific to that phone? I'm on an iPhone 13 Pro.

I had an iPhone 12 Pro when this issue started and I got a new phone a few weeks back thinking that might fix it (which obviously it did NOT) and my new phone is an iPhone 14 Pro. so I don’t think it’s phone specific.  Plus, like I mentioned I know a couple other AT&T users with the same issue and my family and friends that have Verizon and sprint don’t seem to have this problem. I used to be with Verizon until about a year ago and now I’m seriously wishing I had never switched. My advice to you, if you are thinking of getting a new phone, is to switch providers instead (if you can).
