Cellular Data Not working off wifi

Hi,

For the last 2 weeks, once I leave my home I do not get cell data or phone calls.  We had a bad storm here and our power (and wifi) was out for 8 hours.  Because wifi was out, calls and data would not send or receive on our wireless cell phones.  When I go for a walk around the block listening to a podcast, if the podcast is not downloaded, I won't be able to listen once I'm out of my home wifi.  I drove to a house 5 min from my house.  Was outside in their yard for 45 min, and I was not able to receive or place calls and texts.  When I'm driving on the road, something will eventually click and my phone will start to work once I'm about 8 blocks away from my house.  But once I get to my destination, it's a toss up if my calls/text will work.  For example, I got off a plane and tried to get a Lyft.  Data wouldn't work. I tried to send a text, also not working.

All 3 At&T wireless Iphone users in this house are having an issue as well as the Iphone AT&T wireless users across the street.  I have called in countless times and no one can help.  They all the towers are fine. We have done all their "troubleshooting" tasks (multiple times) and they keep saying "our engineers will have to look into it. It will take 48-72 hours" and nothing.  We have requested callbacks, but never get them.

Is anyone else having similar issues? Or figured out how to actually get At&t to help?

Hey ! Allow us to share a few of our recommendations to help boost your connection!

Your home can affect your signal. The materials used to build it, where it is built, and the overall environment of your home. Move away from dead-zone(s) in your home, near a window or area without electronics.

Sometimes, during peak times, AT&T may slow down speed to keep everyone connected. Rural areas tend to have weaker signals. Dropping your phone can damage the components inside. This can affect your calls, texts, and internet experience.

Reset your network settings to refresh your connection. Resetting the network restores the default settings on the device. Be aware, Bluetooth pairing and Wi-Fi settings are deleted and will need to be re-added. You will not lose data like pictures, videos, or text.

    • iPhone: Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings
    • Android: Settings>General Management>Reset>Reset network settings

Next, visit our AT&T Wireless Support webpage and select Get Suggestions. You'll be directed to the Fix an Issue section. From there you will select your device then navigate back to that section and click Connection>Internet. Then follow the prompts and you'll come across very helpful personalized solutions.

If you can receive a Wi-Fi connection, set up Wi-Fi Calling. Your phone uses Wi-Fi for calls and texts when cellular coverage isn’t available. This means that in a natural disaster or other emergency, your phone will work if it’s connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Learn about other ways your wireless service can be affected by reading our Forums article titled Dropped Calls & Low Signal - Solutions From The AT&T Community.

Please come back and let us know if this helped! Thank you for connecting with AT&T Community Forums!

We have already tried every troubleshooting your reps have offered. (including the suggested reset network settings, we have actually done it three times).  I understand during peak times slower internet speed, but this happens any time of day.

This happens not even in our house, but a walk around the block.  EVERY SINGLE TIME we leave our house and get off wifi, data does not work until we are a min of 9 blocks away.  EVERY SINGLE TIME a friend comes to our house and has AT&T service, they don't receive data (it doesn't matter if they are IN our house or outside in the yard).

Based on your service concerns, we want to get you into a DM to take a closer look into some additional troubleshooting options and reviewing your connection @Sweetde00. Check the message icon in the upper right corner of the page and reply.

In the meantime, gather your account information and we'll get started working towards a solution. Again, keep an eye out for the DM.

I should also clarify it is not just data.  It is text as well.  They do not send or receive during this time.

I am having the same issue.  As soon as I leave the house and off WiFi, my call disconnects and get "call failed". It's very aggravating. It seems AT&T or the iPhone isn't handing off from WiFi to cellular for some reason.

YES!

I am still waiting for help!  The result of the "direct message" was yet another ticket number given to me (my 4th) and told to give it 3-5 DAYS to possibly be worked.

Hello @Khunter007, we see you have ran into the same concern as @Sweetde00.

You may need to turn the data on in your my AT&T app. Its done through the myAT&T app or the web site. Here is a awesome article with detailed steps on how to turn your data on and off on your device.

We recommend doing a troubleshoot your device. You can easily find out what you can do to fix why your calls are dropping if not using wi-fi. The TS&R should help you get your device working again.

Please let us know if this is helpful for you, Thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community.

I am running into this same issue as well as my 2 daughters.  We all have iPhones.  It appears to be something that has changed within the last month.  The only way I find getting around it is to reboot my phone

Hi @Merylt68, we want to help you with your cellular data on your iPhones!

Learn how to check coverage at your location, get device help, or report network issues. First See if there are any AT&T service outages near you.

Sometimes, your wireless device or its settings can cause connectivity issues. Make sure you have your device handy and try this:

  • Go to our troubleshooting tool.
  • Select your phone brand and model.
  • Choose the option in Connections that's giving you trouble (for example: Internet or Phone calls).Follow the prompts to fix your issue.

Let us know if the above steps help.

Hey @Merylt68

Next time you talk to a representative ask them if they just shut down 3g in your area.  I am STILL waiting for a resolution to my issue.  Found out at the beginning of the month they shut down 3g from my tower (a mile away and i live in the city) and they only have 5g.  WELLLLL. 5g doesn't reach as far as 3g!  So if that's the case, looks like its our loss and they are no longer providing the service.
