Unlock phone - free SIM

Good Day,

I have bought in the US a Samsung Galaxy A53 5G phone and an AT&T prepaid SIM (1 month).

Coming back from the US, I wanted to unlock the phone to my local SIM.

When I try to that on the website, it says:

Looks like we can't unlock your device just yet. Try your unlock request again after your service has been active for at least 60 days.

Thanks.

This may be the first time you've heard it but it's not the first time I have written it:

If you do not intend to use a phone on AT&T on a permanent basis, do not buy phones from AT&T. The minimum lock is 60 days. Prepaid phones are locked for 6 months.

Did you purchase postpaid or prepaid service? Are you still paying for it?

I'm going to add to the above, every carrier in the United States has a minimum lock term Of 60 days.    Absolutely positively do not buy phones from a service provider in the United States. If you need to buy a phone while you are here purchased directly from one of the manufacturers

Hi,

I have purchased a pre-paid SIM card, for one month subscription.

So no, I am no longer paying for it.

Thank you for bringing your question, @yevlev,  to the Community Forums! We understand wanting to get your device unlocked for travel purposes. We would like to help!

As @formerlyknownas  stated to answer your question about inserting the SIM after unlocking it, yes this can be processed. Have you submitted our Device Unlock Portal? If so, and if it was approved please take a look at our Unlock Instructions it will have how to unlock your device once you have received the unlock code.

Check the status of your request by:

  1. Go to our Status Portal.
  2.  Enter your IMEI Number & Request Number.
  3. Follow the prompts.

Prepaid / GoPhone

  • The device must be active for at least six months of paid service.

Important:

AT&T reserves the right to deny any unlock request that it concludes would result in an abuse of this policy or is part of an effort to defraud AT&T or its customers. AT&T further reserves the right to alter this unlocking policy at its discretion without advance notice.

Let me know if this helps! Thank you for reaching out to Community Forums.

Hi,

I would be very clear now:

I explicitly asked the salesperson regarding whether the phone would work in my home country (i.e., it is not locked) and she replied positively.

Thus, I see it as hiding and information, which is TOTALLY UNACCAPTABLE.

As I said before, when I try to submit a request to the Device Unlock Portal,

I get the following error:

"Looks like we can't unlock your device just yet. Try your unlock request again after your service has been active for at least 60 days."

I insist that my phone would be unlocked ASAP, and tomorrow my

lawyer will contact AT&T.

Best,

Yevgeny.

Or you can save the cost of an hourly lawyer and the long-distance charges, and just wait another 30 days and try again. 🙄

Thank you for your response, @yevlev.

We do understand how important it is for you to be able to have your device unlocked, so you can be able to use it in your home country. It sounds as if you were not fully informed of our device unlock requirements at the time of purchase. As stated by our previous agent and our ACE @formerlyknownas, you will have to wait at least 60 days of active service, which is why you are getting that error code when trying to submit your device unlock request.

Can you provide us with the day you activated service? This will help us determine when you will be able to submit a new request.

We do look forward to your response. We may need to bring you into a Direct Message to take a closer look at your account.

Good Day,

The day of purchasing and activation was June 12th.

I will by no means wait 60 days. This is out of the question.

Please let me know what additional concrete information do you need and how can I contact your representative directly.

Otherwise, I will take a legal action.

Best,

Yevgeny.

You have no legal action. Regardless of what they told you your phone will not be unlocked until requirements are met. I was told my car would get 40 miles per gallon by my salesman. I’ve never seen more than 30 do you think I have legal action? NO   You can’t rant and rave all you want and threaten legal action all you want but your paperwork spells it all out in your terms of service.

I will act as I find it right.

And no, it does not appear in the terms of service I was given.

I’m calling bull. It’s in every tos prepaid and postpaid. Did you also miss the part where prepaid doesn’t refund? Also your limited to binding arbitration which requires you to be in the US to appear. No attorney in their right mind will touch it. Seems like a lot of money to unlock a  mid level Samsung. @formerlyknownas  you happen to have the requirements to unlock handy? I’m not at my computer. This guy seems to think he’s the exception to the rule.

Hi @yevlev, we understand your frustration on wanting to get your device unlocked.

As stated by @formerlyknownas, you have to meet the requirments to begin the process in unlocking your device. In this case you have PREPAID which requires the device to be active for at least six months of paid service.

For detailed information on the requirements please feel free to check our AT&T Device Unlock Help - Solutions & FAQS page.

Let us know if you have any other questions we'll be happy to assist.

As I said, you will hear from my lawyer.

Including the salesperson who delivered me a false info. on a concere question.

THE JOB OF A SALESPERSON IS TO FULLY UPDATE THE CUSTOMER IN EVERY MAJOR DETAIL.

YOU BADLY FAILED IN THIS TASK.

As I said, you will hear from my lawyer.

Yeah, good luck with that. You’ll likely spend more in legal fees than just buying a new phone. You also never said where you bought the phone. If it was an authorized retail store, you didn’t even buy it from ATT. Authorized retail stores are independently owned and operated and store personnel are not ATT employees.
