Selling a GoPhone and Google log in

I have a GoPhone I want to sell for a couple of bucks or give away. One guy bought it but complained the phone wanted the login for the prior Google account, though the phone has been factory reset. I gave him his money back and I booted up and skipped the sim step and logged into my wireless network, because the phone wanted to log in. No way around that. It even said the phone had been reset and to enter the credentials for the old account. hmmmm It does show the option to look for the login based on a phone number, so I assume if a new set of credentials is entered the new person would be free to use it after entering their phone number. If that is true, OK, but confusing. Maybe the first guy didn't try that or didn't have a Google account. He stopped at the phone wanting my Google log in, which again is strange, since the phone was reset.

I also wonder if there is no way to use the phone without logging into Google? I did go through this with a SIM from a carrier I have on hand and had the same experience. The phone is unlocked.

I found the easiest solution is to go ahead and log into the phone and get to the desktop and do a reset from the settings screen. When it comes back up the associated Google account is gone.

Google has an activation lock, just like iCloud. Try this for your model phone. google activation lock. Of course not a Samsung account if you don't have a Samsung phone.

If you use android device manager in the phone, you can login through a computer and remove/erase the device from your account, https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6160491?hl=en

and do the same with Google account.
